Yeah, the ability to work without batts is essential if you are in the business of fixing phones. I really never needed voltage and current for POTS line copper repair throughout almost 40 years of doing it.
My ear was the best instrument followed up by a good analog ohm meter.

I will say, from experience, the butt sets that have a digital display are nice because you get immediate feedback on on-hook/off-hook voltage and amps, the one touch dialing feature is nice for ANI, but you can usually call your cell phone for that. I've had the most experience with the Fluke TS52 butt set. I will say though that I always had a butt set that didn't require batteries for those times I ran out of batteries and was a million miles from nowhere, or when the LCD would freeze in the Wyoming winter winds, :-).

I'm looking for recommendations for butt sets for some upcoming jobs.
Basically I need to get dial tone and and verify the number I am connected to but not sure of other features that may come with the higher end sets that may be helpful.
