So, stupid question: if the batteries fail due to internal anode-cathode shorts as I read in one report, how does powering them down prevent it?

Does use or charging heat the battery, causing the short? Or could they just short out any time and burst into flames?

It does sound like defective batteries, since they are not recalling the S7 model, or the Note7 sold in China which supposedly used a different battery manufacturer. Or maybe this will just be a creeping recall like Takata airbags.
