Worked for me. If you buy it through google doamins the DNS is
setup automatically for gmail to work.

Personally it doesn't matter who the registrar is you just
point the DNS servers to where you want to host. Gmail for
        example.

or I'll host it for you :) Haven't been down yet (knock knock).

If you are looking to do that just move your web/email to a
hosted solution somewhere. I'd avoid places like Hostgator
etc. Though they run the same sort of thing I do they are so
huge they are a target for non stop hackers. The resources
are pretty thin and performance isn't very good.

Personally I'd do it yourself. For $300 you can get a Cpanel
license (per year) that comes with WHM, then upgrade it to
cloudlinux and you can split all the resources per domain to
make sure no one domain can exceed certain amounts of usage. You could even resell space to your customers.

However their email front ends (Horde etc) are not the best
they are user friendly. The panel for managing DNS, Email
        accounts is pretty easy too.

But if you are looking large scale down the road (ie 1000+
        users) I'd consider an alternative.

If you only see yourself as part of the team but you don't see your team as part of yourself you have already failed as part of the team.
