Hmmm, electoral mutiny. I like the sound of that.

On the other hand, I think only about half of the states actually bind
their electors to vote for the candidate that won that state. So in
theory, we just need to get a few rogue electors to vote for Chuck,
and it'll all work out fine...

Scratch that. Only Maine (4 votes), and Nebraska (5 votes) award
electoral votes by proportion. That means that someone would have
to get more than half of 25% or 20% respectively (or however those
states divide the proportions).

Although... Aren't there a handful of states that give electoral
votes by proportion of the popular vote? That could theoretically
add a few votes to Johnson and/or Stein.

Good point. While McMullin might be able to win Utah (and get
those 6 votes), the likelihood of Johnson or Stein getting even
one electoral vote seem pretty remote.

I don't think so. As far as I know, McMullin is the only one
other than Clinton and Trump with any real chance at getting
any electoral votes - Johnson and Stein will likely both get a
much higher percentage of the popular vote than McMullin, but I
don't think either of them is anywhere close to winning a state
in the polls.
But Like Chuck said, it's really all academic. The possibility
of Clinton and Trump both losing a majority by less than six
electoral votes is pretty remote.

That would be a really slight chance. Among the candidates
running, I would rank their respective (probable) electoral
votes at (1) Clinton, (2) Trump, (3) Johnson, (4) Stein,
(5) McMullin.

If I understand the system right, if there's no majority,
congress has to pick from the candidates with the top
three most electoral votes (and there would only be three
in that scenario)
... my guess is that, in that case (depending on what the
new congress looks like), there would be a pretty good
chance of ending up with Hillary anyway, but there would
be a slight chance they'd all compromise on McMullin.

We have a republican majority in Congress, but the

Nobody having a majority is my favorite scenario,

Unfortunately I think Clinton will win by a
landslide because people are stuck in this mentality
where we have to pick a winning horse rather than
voting for what we really want. It can still work
out if Trump can rally a little bit and get back to
being tied with Clinton. Then we can have a split,
no majority for anyone, and Congress can pick a
non-awful president.

I think he has more presidential qualifications
than Trump does.
And if my a miracle we can prevent 270 for Hillary
then the House of Representatives get to pick the
president.
And I doubt they will pick Trump. So in that
respect, Utah is saving the nation...
