Maybe I'm too paranoid about starting a fire. Now that I think about it, of all the damaged customer premise Cat 5 that I've seen I've never noticed any indication that it almost caught fire.

Are you talking about just regular zip cord style cable, or special flat
speaker cable? I've had regular zip cord (the clear many-stranded stuff
intended for speakers) under a carpet for 40 years and it's fine, never got
around to running it through the basement. It might be slightly visible where
the wire runs, depending on the carpet and padding. That's probably the reason
for the special flat cable, like maybe from Monster Cable?

I used some copper foil and tape once. It was a product I got at a stereo
store long ago.
Worked forever.

I need to run some speaker cables under a carpet but worry about the long term
effects of foot traffic and shorting the wire. Has anyone done this?
