I didn't miss the point, I rejected it.

I think you are missing the point here...

You know that Bandwidth Cost is heading down-wards ....

and Dark Fiber Cost is being manipulated to go-upwards ...
by (acquisition, and taking excess inventory off the table).

Net result is a changing economics where only a few are actively working on
cornering the price of fiber connectivity.

If you want to see a good example of this playing out... take a look at what is
happening in the Caribbean Island connectivity.

The largest ISP's are the ones who are controlling the Undersea cable, thus
setting up the rules of the game, as they fold into each other, pitting them
against each other gets harder....

I am not presenting this as doom and gloom, just saying that if you are okay
with this, don't be crying that one day you wake up to find out that the only
choice you have is between bad and worse .... :)

-------------------
Where is this all leading to ?

Here is what we are seeing, I believe that both the Cable Co and the ILEC are
in a race to make alternate technologies obsolete, raising the game for
'Gigabit connectivity' (don't read this a 1g connection, anything over 300meg
would fall in this category).

ATT is quietly converting all of their ME buildings into a nice GPON based
offering.
Comcast is doing a nice overbuild...
Keep in mind both of them are monopolies, when it comes to serving territory..

So if this continues, the competitive offerings will get starved out, or be
severely marginalized by being limited in service area due to lack of viable
cost-effective backhaul.

You are going to see this in the Major Metro Areas first (starting in the next
couple of years, and building up to full steam pace in say 5 years).... and
then you will this spanning out to other areas.

Will you see this in your area ? I cannot say yes or no, but this is where
things seem to be headed.

The more fiber companies bought, the more that start up. Not 1:1, but it's
happening. Level 3 started buying up anyone selling dark... then Zayo comes
along and overbuilds everything.

I have confidence that VZ and AT&T couldn't keep up buying everyone.

Yes, Mike while this is a position one can choose to take, I would argue that
it is a position is at best one of 'short term' which would lead to self
destruction.

for many reasons:-

Telco's and ILEC's are working on a 20, 30 year out look, while you and I can
barely see beyond a year or so.
They are big enough to buy whom ever they want. So if you think that there is a
lot of competitive fiber available, check again, and you will see that the
amount of choices in the market place are shrinking due to acquisitions.

Just look at who Folks such as Centurylink has gobbled up in the last 5-10
years.
Look at the count of independent competitive providers by count 10 -15 years
ago vs today .

The larger they grow, the more in-significant we all become in the bigger
picture.

I'm fine with the wireline world being decimated. It's easier to get to
competitive fiber (unless you're in Alaska) than it is to generate the market
demand that sleepy incumbents provide.

While I realize that someone of you have an incredibly deep rooted 'hatred' for
folks from the other party, I would strongly suggest you go back 12/18 years
and see how the FCC has acted under different administrations.

While you may not care too much for this, but the CLEC's business / Wireline
business were decimated under then Republican FCC ...(WISP's were spared and
actually picked up business from that carnage). At that time the larger ILEC's
were focused on wire-line business... Some of you feel the pinch of this when
you go looking for Fat Pipes for your Backhaul and get shafted by the only
option available to you... That is not a random coincidence...

Yes, I am simplifying this.....a lot happen when WISP's were 'sleeping'...

Now, I cringe, to see what happens in the coming years, especially since the
ILEC's have decided to focus on Wireless, in favor of the wire line...

If I was to describe what happened in the wireline world, it would be like...
The Republicans shot the small business isp/nsp/clec's in the back, and the
Democrats double nailed the coffins so that there was pretty much no chance of
possible revival.

Non-the less life goes on..

Good to see our boy leaving a legacy that reflects what his leadership has been
all about. I wonder who got paid back for this contract.
