No, not dumb. Put a fuse in the -48 leg.
Hopefully neither the radio or the power supply connect either side to
ground. If one of them does the other needs to be floating or matching.

Is it dumb of me to run a pair of wires up a tower 30 feet to connect DC
voltage to the radio straight to the power supply in a cabinet at the base?
If so, what do I do to ground it or fuse it or isolate it?
