The Blue MOVs are for AC surge protection. The MTEK transformer isolates the Ethernet in and out from each other. So lighting is more likely to damage this transformer in this POE, that the one in the computer or router. Of course a big enough jolt could still arc across the connections.

I'm working with the Ubiquiti 48V PoE (24W, Gigabit version) for some residential installations. Ubiquiti says "they provide earth grounding and surge protection". I'm interested to assess the capability to help know what other surge suppression may be necessary vs redundant when used in combination. I've got one opened up, and the grounding is obvious... but I don't see anything jumping out at me as surge suppression. Which components are likely doing the surge suppression here?
