It seems like more research needs to be done on mental health and
detection of mental health issues. While more difficult and more
expensive, that would solve a lot more societal issues.

While I understand your sentiment.
The only people that obey the law are lawful citizens
and people who are going to kill could care less so
any "new" laws are by definition only going to affect
those who are already lawful citizens...
While guns are top of the current FBI list for homicide
weapons, next are knives/cutting instruments,
then clubs, hammers, blunt instruments, next are
personal (hands, feet, etc).
To be honest, more people are killed each year due
to drunk/intoxicated driving than all homicides put together.
How about we totally ban drinking and make a real difference???
