The parranda is like a surprise party… a group go unannounced to a friends
house and you start by yelling “Asalto” o “Parranda” and start singing
traditional but very “party” sms songs… usually the unsuspecting host welcomes
you to his home and provides drinks and traditional xmas food… You sing until
the host opens the door….

This usually starts about 9-10 pm and you go till morning… visiting several
houses on the same night

NPR had report on Puerto Rico Christmas tradition of singing at night to get
party going...called paranda...paranda means bar hopping or a drinking
binge...we call ours, posada for this Christmas tradition like carolling and
then invited in for hot chocolate...we serve tamales, bunuelos and sopapillas.
It's based on Joseph asking for a place to spend night for his wife.
