Was he a hand typesetter or a linotype operator or both?
I am guessing both. Looks like linotypes stopped being used during the 1980s for the most part. I watched several videos about they yesterday. I now understand how they did the justification. Pretty clever.
Wedges between each word were inserted until the whole line was long enough.

My Granddad was a typesetter.. Amazingly enough it wasn't the lead that
killed him.. 3 packs a day was deadlier...

It started a bit slow and slightly confusing but I enjoyed it.
I remember when this stuff happened but I was not paying as much attention to it as Watergate that came a bit later.
Seems like Patti Hearst was about the same era.
I had forgotten about Linotype machines. Was explaining how it worked to my son during the movie.
Then I came home and started watching youtubes about linotypes.
I remember when the newspapers used them. When you toured them as a school kid they would give you a bar of type with your name on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gQasrMBALA
