        >The XI International Ethnographic Film Festival
        >
        >
        >The XI International Ethnographic Film Festival organised by the
        >Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico of Sardinia (I.S.R.E.),
will be
        >held in Nuoro from the 7th to the12th of October 2002.
        >The Festival which is a biennial event always adopts a specific
theme:
        >"The Shepherd and His Image" (1982); "The World Upside Down or
Carnival
        >and Controlled Transgression" (1984); "The Wedding. Marriage
Rituals in
        >Traditional Societies" (1986); "Women and Work in Traditional
Societies"
        >(1988); "Islands" (1990); "Mountains" (1992);  "Men and
Rivers"(1994);
        >"Magic and Medicine in Traditional Societies" (1996); "Music and
        >Rituals" (1998); "Children" (2000).
        >
        >This year's Festival is entitled "Food" and for films included in
        >competition the following awards are available:
        >A.   Best Film;
        >B.    Most Innovative Film;
        >C.   Best Film, set and produced in a Mediterranean country;
        >D.   Best Film by a Sardinian director;
        >Key words for the Festival are: Food-stuffs, Hunger, Famine,
Privation,
        >Abundance, Waste, Nourishment, Gastronomy, Food surpluses, Ritual
Meals,
        >Raw, Cooked, Cooking methods, Commerce.
        >
        >Films that are deemed pertinent to the theme will be inserted in
the
        >general filmography which will accompany the Festival's official
        >catalogue.
        >Apart from films in competition the Festival also includes
sections out
        >of competition.
        >Complimenting the screenings there will be around the table debates
and
        >conferences with the participation of experts and academics from
Italy
        >and abroad.
        >The screenings will be accompanied by a brief presentation and, as
a
        >general rule, commented on and discussed with their directors.
        >The projections, talks, conferences and discussions will be served
by
        >simultaneous translations in Italian, English and French.
        >
        >
        >ENTRY RULES
        >
        >
        >1. The Festival is open to films dealing with the theme "Food",
        >completed after 1990, produced on 16mm or 35mm film (optical or
magnetic
        >or double track for 16mm; optical sound track for 35mm) or on3/4
U-Matic
        >videotape on high or low band, Hi8 (on Pal, Secam or NTSC), or on
        >digital format DVCAM and MINIDVCAM.
        >
        >2. The selection of films to be included in the Festival will be
made by
        >a committee composed of internationally recognised experts in the
field
        >of visual anthropology. The selection committee reserves the
        >incontestable right to include or exclude or to insert into the
outside
        >competition section, any film submitted for inclusion in
competition.
        >
        >3. For inclusion in the selection a video copy of those entries
made on
        >film should be sent. To be able to participate it is necessary to
send a
        >video copy, on any format to the following address:

        >4. The closing date for selection in the Festival is May 31st 2002.
        >
        >5. The films must be accompanied by the appropriate entry form,
        >completed in every part in either Italian, English or French. For
the
        >published catalogue it is also essential that entrants enclose: two
        >still photographs from the film, a biography/filmography of its
        >director, a photograph of the director and a typed script or floppy
disc
        >of the dialogue and/or commentary of the film in one of the
Festival's
        >three official languages. Any other relevant information will be
        >gratefully received. Entrance to the Festival is free.
        >
        >6. Films made in a language other than Italian, English or French
must
        >be subtitled in one of the above mentioned languages. Alternatively
they
        >must be accompanied by a complete type written translated script or
        >floppy disc of the titles and every other written or spoken text
        >inherent in the film, in one of the Festival's official languages.
        >
        >7. The directors of the works selected for inclusion in the
Festival
        >will be invited to participate in it by the organisers. The
I.S.R.E.
        >will pay for hotel and restaurant costs for the duration of the
event.
        >Travel costs to and from Sardinia will be borne by the
participants.
        >
        >8. At the Festival's close a jury composed of internationally
recognised
        >academics will award the following prizes:
                >>
        >A. Prize for Best Film>
        >10329.31 Euro
                >>
        >B. Prize for Most Innovative Film >
        >6.200 Euro
        >
        >C. Prize for Best Film Produced and Set in a Mediterranean Country.
        >6.200 Euro
                >>
        >D. Prize for the Best Film by a Sardinian Director>
        >6.200 Euro
        >
        >These are the gross value of the prizes that will be assigned to
the
        >film's directors. The tax subtracted will be at the rate of 30% for
        >prize winners from abroad and 25% for Italian citizens. The
exchange
        >rate given will be that of the day of the prize giving.
        >The jury may award the prizes for any section even ex aequo.
        >The  I.S.R.E. reserves the right to award other prizes or give
special
        >recommendations in accordance with the jury's assessments.
        >
        >9. The video copies sent for inclusion and selection in the
Festival
        >will be retained free of cost for the archives of the I.S.R.E., for
its
        >institutional aims and non commercial use only.
        >
        >10. Successful entrants will be informed of their films selection
for
        >the official programme before June 30th 2002.
        >If no notification is received before the above mentioned date
entrants
        >should consider that their film has not been accepted for
selection.
        >Films selected must arrive in their original standard format and in
        >excellent condition before September 15th 2002, at one of the
following
        >addresses:
        >a) Videotapes from abroad and videotapes and documentaries on film
        >coming from Italy: Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico, via
Mereu,
        >56, 08100 Nuoro, Italy.
        >b) Documentaries on film coming from outside Italy: Agenzia
Espressi
        >Internationali Aerei (A.E.I.A.) S.r.l., 00055 Aeroporto di
Fiumicino
        >(Roma), notifying the I.S.R.E., via Mereu, 56 - 08100 Nuoro, Italy.
        >
        >11. Films sent for showing in the official Festival  programme will
        >returned before November 15th 2002, except in cases were other
        >arrangements have been made.
        >
        >12. The cost of forwarding films to the Festival will be borne by
the
        >sender.
        >
        >13. The costs of returning films chosen for the Festival will be
borne
        >by the I.S.R.E.
        >
        >14. The I.S.R.E. insures films sent for showing in the Festival's
        >official programme for the period of time they are in the
Istituto's
        >custody, confirmed by their arrival and forwarding dates, in the
        >I.S.R.E.'s official records. The I.S.R.E. is not responsible for
any
        >damage occurring outside its custody. For projection in the
Festival a
        >good copy of the documentary should be sent. In any case the
I.S.R.E.
        >does not accept any liability for any loss or deterioration of
unique
        >copies of films sent. Insurance only covers reprinting costs of
films or
        >the reproduction of video cassettes. To this end it is obligatory
to
        >declare on the entry form the value of reproduction costs for films
sent
        >for selection and inclusion in the Festival. Whenever the value is
not
        >indicated on the entry form the value of reproduction will be
        >unilaterally decided by the I.S.R.E.

        >15. The act of submitting an entry form implies the complete
acceptance
        >of the above regulations, including the use of personal details
        >contained on the entry form for non commercial purposes. For the
