Write and direct your own film – a workshop for independent filmmakers

If you have ever wanted to write and direct your own film you can take a
step in the right direction by joining this exciting four-Saturday workshop
for independent minded creative writers and filmmakers.

The four-Saturday workshop for independent filmmakers who want to write and
direct their own film takes place at the Artscape Resource Centre on July 19
& 26 and August 2 & 9 from 10:00 until 18:00 on all four days.

The workshop is uniquely designed and formulated to provide a great training
ground for first-timers and inexperienced scriptwriters and filmmakers; and
also provides an ideal opportunity for school-leavers who would like to gain
insight into the film and television industries.

The Workshop for Independent Filmmakers will help develop their skills for
telling a compelling and dramatic story, and guide them through the process
of writing the first draft of a screenplay and preparing it for filming.

The workshop examines the writing and film process and focuses on the
contemporary world of films and filmmaking.

The scriptwriting sessions are facilitated by Daniel Dercksen, a published
playwright, who has been teaching workshops in scriptwriting throughout
South Africa the past six years, as well as courses at the Newtown Film and
Television School in Johannesburg and City Varsity Film and Television
School in Cape Town. He has also been actively involved in movie journalism
for more than 20 years.

The filmmaking and directing segments are facilitated by Dirk Fourie.
Following several award-winning scripts, short films and music videos during
his three-years at City Varsity, Dirk Fourie has worked as script supervisor
and assistant to Dutch director Roel Rene on the film ‘Adrenaline’, which
was filmed in Cape Town last year and will be released internationally this
year. Dirk also wrote, directed and produced a music video for The Rockets,
which formed part of the NTVA Western Cape’s 2002 Training Initiative, and
work on script continuity for the British television series ‘Cavegirl’. He
also facilitated a short course in film and videomaking at City Varsity Film
and Television School and is currently involved as Producer on the NTVA's
training initiative for 2003, which involves the making of a 26-minute short
film that will be filmed in September and enjoy its premiere at Sithengi in
November..

The courses give filmmakers the essential tools and show how to stay
positive, passionate and productive while maintaining realistic goals and
expectations about the filmmaking process.

The workshop is endorsed by the Artscape Resource Centre, the South African
Scriptwriters Association (SASWA), Sithengi and the Cape Film Commission,
and offers special discounts to members of SASWA, the NTVA, the IPO,
scholars, students and pensioners. There are also bursaries available at the
Artscape Resource Centre.

The cost of the four-Saturday workshop is R800, with a 25% discount to
students, scholars or members of the NTVA, SASWA and the IPO.
