Last Friday, over a hundred people brought out their umbrellas and stayed through the pouring rain to celebrate Mandela's birthday with a powerful screening of Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony, the story of black South African freedom music. Join us this Friday the 30th of July, for the closing night celebration of Through African Eyes, as ImageNation Film Festival presents: Flicks, Beats & Life An evening combining the hard-core soul of Tamar-kali's music, the poetry of Bassey (featured on HBO's Def Poetry) and the thrill of zany, serious and edgy short films by directors from the African Diaspora The evening begins at 6:45pm with music by Tamar-kali Recognized by the Schomberg Center as a meaningful contributor to the ever-continuing Harlem Renaissance, Tamar-kali harnesses gut-based, hardcore-tinged rock with the honest, melodic inflections of soul. This year's festival screenings include: On Wednesday July 23rd from Brazil "Houve Uma Vaz Dios Veroes (Two Summers)" written and directed by Jorge Furtado shown at Socrates Sculpture Park. On Sunday July 27th from Columbia "La Pena Maxima (Maximum Penalty)" directed by Jorge Echeverri shown at Queens Museum of Art. On Wednesday August 6th from Argentina "Nueva Reinas (Nine Queens)" directed by Fabian Bielinksky also shown in Socrates Sculpture Park.
