Subject: CD of Traditional Zulu Songs by Children of Agape Orphanage
The children recorded a CD called "Thina Simunye- We Are
Together" this past summer and are now selling it to raise
funds to rebuild their orphanage after it was burned down in
a fire this Christmas.
They live in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, which with 1 in 3
people infected with HIV/AIDS, is thought to be most
severely affected region in the world. Yet the children are
talented, passionate and very happy individuals despite
their circumstances.
They were joined in the studio by Zwai Bala of TkZEE and
SouthAfrican Popstars who was kind enough to donate his time
and vocals to two songs.
The CD has been called some of the most beautiful and
intensely moving music...to call it the CD of the year would
be an enormous understatement," by Dan Zanes
Six of the children have just returned to South Africa after
a trip to New York (they were invited to perform, raise
awareness and sell their CD to help raise funds) where they
performed at the Tribeca Film Festival, met and sang for
Alicia Keys, performed "Afrika" with Anglique Kidjo!!!! and
recorded with Dan Zanes.
They also appeared on CBS news, Good Morning America, Extra
and in the NY Daily News and NY Times. The children raised a
lot of awareness and allowed the public to put some faces
and personalities to the statistics.
They raised enough money from this trip to rebuild the main
building for their new orphanage. However, we are still
trying to raise the funds to build the 8 cottages that will
actually house the children and that will surround the main
building. The new buildings will be able to accomodate many
more children and so help the community deal with the
overwhelming numbers of parentless children.
Please visit our site http://www.simunyeproject.com to learn
more, hear song clips and buy the CD.
Please contact me with any questions,
Pauline

Subject: Fwd: King Tut Campaign
Greeting Everyone,
Are you aware of the controversy surrounding the King Tut exhibit that is
opening up next week in Los Angeles? Unlike the past, this exhibit's promoters,
curators, researchers etc. have arrogantly chosen to attempt to distort the
image of the Ancient Egyptians by including a reconstructed statue of King
Tut's head. The statue depicts King Tut as a 19 yr old White youth. This is
something we can't allow to happen without putting up a fight. We have an
obligation to stop the degradation of the image of the Ancient Egyptians. If
you share these views, download and mail the attached letters.
This is not a campaign to boycott the exhibit! The goal is to prevent the
statue from being displayed. You are greatly encouraged to go see the
magnificent treasures. THIS STATUE IS NOT ONE OF THE TREASURES. Please forward
this info to others.
This is not just a local issue! This exhibit will be traveling around the
world.
Peace
Nzingha Camara

GO: ORGANIC ORCHESTRA THIS WEEKEND
MUSIC PICK OF THE WEEK - LA WEEKLY JUNE 10, 2005:
This is it. Percussionist Adam Rudolph has been watering Go: Organic
Orchestra for several years, and it keeps growing. The concept combines
Rudolph¹s lush harmonies and vivid structures as he conducts his large
semicircle of players via cue scores and hand signals to produce a surging,
shifting sound with plenty of room for individual spark. An extra dimension:
the orchestra¹s feel for community, which has grown from this city¹s
brightest lights (Bennie Maupin and David Philipson on the older end, Sara
Schoenbeck and Harris Eisenstadt on the younger) to encompass a national and
even international cast (Yusef Lateef contributed a couple of years ago), "I
don¹t know who¹s coming on what night," says Rudolph, "which is how I like it."

> GO: ORGANIC ORCHESTRA - ADAM RUDOLPH, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
>
> THE ORGANIC ORCHESTRA CONCEPT: OVERVIEW
>
> Organic Orchestra is an original orchestral concept of improvisation. The
> music is composed as thematic material, which provides a spontaneous
> orchestral context and inspiration for improvisational dialogue. Music
> materials consist, among other things, of original melodies, textural
> gestures, music languages, tone rows, traditional and synthetic scales,
> diadic and intervalic harmonies, call and response, polyphony, dynamics, and
> the coloration of silences. Additional forms are generated through Rudolph¹s
> concept of ³Cyclic Verticalism², whereby polyrhythms, as used in African
> music, are combined with rhythm cycles, as used in Indian music.
>
>
> In concert, Adam Rudolph conducts the musicians in a spontaneous way, using
> music/letter grids, language themes, graphic and traditional notation, Indian
> ragas and original song forms to create moods, motion, and sonic gestures.
> The orchestral concept is to generate unusual relationships of sound against
> sound, form against form, and rhythm against rhythm in a non-linear, ever
> shifting kaleidoscope of music images.
>
>
>
> The music is ³organic² in the sense that the compositions and conducting
> exist as an inspiration and context for the musicians to express themselves
> by using their instruments as an amplifier for their inner voice. Performers
> are given the freedom to use their imagination and listening ability to
> develop the compositions within their own individual motion and timing, while
> still relating to the overall form and their aesthetic and musical functions.
>
> ORGANIC ORCHESTRA: PERFORMANCE ELEMENTS
>
> THE CUES: In performance, there are 10 cues (music/letter grids, graphic and
> traditional notation), which are available to the conductor throughout the
> concert. Each musician has all 10 of these on his/her music stand at all
> times. Any combination of instruments could be cued at any time (solo to full
> orchestra). The hand signal cues go from general direction (cue #) to more
> and more specific: range, dynamics, type of gesture etc. There are varying
> degrees of improvisational freedom offered in the interpretation of these
> cues, depending how specific they are. The directions are simple, clear and
> easy to follow, yet effective in the expressive range they offer.
>
> THE COMPOSITIONS: Each movement consists of 2 4 compositions by Rudolph.
> These can be for the full ensemble, soloist or any predetermined ensemble
> combination. The compositions range from thorough composed passages written
> in western notation, to graphic scores, which allow for considerable
> interpretive freedom by the performers. The compositions serve as modules,
> which can be combined in any sequence or combination. The conductor
> determines when and how each composition is played. In addition, pre-composed
> material can be played in combination with an improvisation. For example, a
> written oboe solo might become a duet with an improvised solo on flute.
> Further, this duet might be orchestrated with various cues from the orchestra
> or sections of the orchestra.
>
> THE CONDUCTOR: Adam Rudolph serves as the ³improvising conductor² for the
> Organic Orchestra concept. His job is to listen and create the orchestrations
> from the compositional elements, the cues, the rhythmic devices and the
> improviser¹s expression.

African History Is Made a High School Requirement
>From Associated Press
June 10, 2005
PHILADELPHIA ? High school students here must take a course in African and
African American history as a requirement for graduation starting with the next
freshman class, officials said Thursday.
Leaders of the school district, where two-thirds of students are black, hope
the course will not only keep those students interested in their academic work
but give others a more accurate view of history.
"We have the opportunity ? to do something under our watch that is really going
to do right by our students ? to say, 'We've come from some pretty great
places,' " said Assistant Supt. Cecilia Cannon.
The course, already offered as an elective, covers topics including classical
African civilizations, civil rights and black nationalism.

CALIFORNIA CLASSROOM
With a kazoo, all you have to do is hum a few bars
June 9, 2005
The kazoo had its roots in Africa, but this fun musical instrument has become
as American as apple pie.
Kazoos come in many shapes and sizes. The most popular ones look like those
shown here. But a kazoo has no keys or strings, so how do you make music with
it?
A kazoo has a tiny membrane inside that vibrates when you hum into the large
end. You can't just blow into it, you have to hum. Once you've started humming,
you can play a song just by going "toot-toot-toot" into the kazoo.
The earliest kazoo was an African instrument called the mirliton. African
villagers made them out of cow horns and the membrane was made of spider
eggshells. Mirlitons were used at special ceremonies as a way for villagers to
change their voices. It was believed that this kept evil spirits from
recognizing them.
In the 1840s, an African American by the name of Alabama Vest got the idea to
make the first American kazoo. Musicians played them in jazz and blues bands in
the early 1900s. They were even played during symphonic performances.
The original American Kazoo Co. was established in 1916 in Eden, N.Y. Today
it's the only metal kazoo factory in the world. The company has a museum that
highlights the kazoo's history, provides amusing trivia and shows visitors,
step by step, how kazoos are made.
Anyone can play this musical instrument. Get a free kazoo, join the Kazoo Band,
and play a special piece on the kazoo inspired by Mozart as part of Symphony in
the Glen's special Father's Day concert on June 19. The fun begins at 4:30 p.m.
A concert follows at 6. For more information, go to
http://www.symphonyintheglen.org or call (213) 955-6976.
This Learning Link was written by Arthur B. Rubinstein, founder and music
director of Symphony in the Glen, located in Griffith Park, near the
merry-goround. To find parking, follow the blue and white signs.

*** WHITE MUSIC FOR AFRICA
Do you remember Live Aid of 20 years ago? The times they are a-changin'
but Bob Geldof tries again with his new Guiness-book-of-Records attempt
called Live 8 on 2 July http://www.live8live.com . But now he is facing
anger from African bands over the announced line up. Only one African act
- the Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour - appears in the list of artists
in London, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome. Ian Ashbridge of the
London based label Wrasse Records, accused Geldof of being 'deeply
patronising.' 'He talks about fair trade for Africa but he's acting just
like the West when it comes to choosing who will appear.'
FRoots offers a good forum to follow the discussion at
http://froots.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=92 .
If you agree with Ian's position, please make some noise in your own
favourite media.
See you all again in Newcastle Gateshead / UK, 26 ? 30 Oct 2005,
Your WOMEX team in Berlin
