African community radios go on line

Montreal, June 21, 2005. Five African community radio stations have opened
their Web portals to the world, and more will follow their lead as part of
a project that seeks to strengthen radio broadcasting on the continent, the
World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) in Africa
announced today.

The CATIA program "Building Broadcasting in Africa" is a strategic
multi-partner initiative that uses radio to help increase access to
information. The three main partner organizations are AMARC Africa, One
World and the Panos Institute. The program focuses on four main measures
that together provide a strategic approach to building the effectiveness of
radio as a tool for democratization, development and action against
poverty. These measures are: providing access to technology, building
training and technical knowledge, investing in content development and
providing access to information sharing.

With their new portals, community radios Mecap FM (Togo), Niani FM
(Senegal), Radio Baniganse (Benin), Radio Khwezi (South Africa), Radio
Yopougon (Ivory Coast) will be able to acquire new technical skills,
exchange information and resources, improve communication, and increase
their visibility in the region.

AMARC Africa serves and supports over 385 member radio stations in all
regions of sub-Saharan Africa. The World Association of Community Radio
Broadcasters (AMARC) is an international non-governmental organization
serving the community radio movement. It has more than 3,000 members in
over 110 countries.

Tute Chigamba was born into a family of traditional and spiritual musicians.
The
son of a master drummer and dancer, Chigamba has kept the traditions of his
musical heritage alive so that now many of his own children and grandchildren
lead others in carrying on these traditions. A key player at ceremonies during
the struggle for independence from 1972-1979, Chigamba's popularity has since
spread not just across Zimbabwe, but throughout the world. He has introduced
thousands of people to mbira and now receives students from many countries at
his home in Zimbabwe where he continues to compose songs, make mbiras and hold
healing ceremonies.

Irene Chigamba, Founder and Artistic Director of Mhembero Dance Troupe since
1984, learned to play mbira from the age of eight by watching her father. Her
training in Zimbabwean traditional dance began with her father, mother and
relatives in the village. Later, as a longtime member of the National Dance
Company of Zimbabwe she learned about the performance and cultural context of
dances from other regions of Zimbabwe, and gained choreographic skills that
guide her work with Mhembero today. Irene teaches mbira, drums, marimba and
dance both privately and at the Zimbabwe College of Music. Together and
independently, Irene and Tute have performed in USA, Canada, Australia,
Germany,
England, Austria, Mozambique, Zambia, Russia, India, North Korea, China and
Malaysia among other countries.

Ronnie Daliyo, cousin of the Chigamba family, has been a dancer and musician
with Mhembero since 1993. He performs and teaches dance, drumming, marimba and
vocals.

Julia Chigamba, after many years dancing with Mhembero Dance Troupe, came to
the
USA in 1999. Two years later, in Oakland, California, she established the
organization Tawanda muChinyakare and the music and dance company Chinyakare to
share the beauty and wisdom of her culture in the USA. The Chinyakare Ensemble
boasts a collection of diverse and experienced musicians from both Africa and
the United States. True to its name, "deep traditional," the ensemble
represents
traditional music and dance from Shona, Ndebele, and other tribal groups from
around Zimbabwe.

Subject: Aha! seeking campus or facility / center for fall Artists Summit

Hi There!

My name is Glenn Horton and I'm the Founder of Artists Helping Artists (Aha!)
and Publisher of The Creative Line magazine. We have completed 5 large Aha!
Call to Arts! artists summits to date (including recent ones in N. Hollywood,
Pasadena and Pomona) and more than 100 local round tables and events, various
juried song and art shows, etc. over the past years. I'm putting out a
request to other arts organization leaders in Southern California for a few
things
that could potentially help your organization as well.

1) A location (such as a college facility, community facility, gallery, art
center) in the Los Angeles, Pasadena or Santa Monica area where we could hold
our upcoming Fall 2005 (Oct or Nov) Call to Arts! Summit VI or our Spring 2006
(May or June).

2) Any fine arts, music, spoken word, storytelling, acting, indy film, etc,
organizations that would like to participate in some way (as workshop
facilitiators, etc.) in one of our large upcoming arts and cultural summits.

3) We are also seeking potential collaborations / partnerships or co-use of
other nonprofit facilities, schools, unused facilities in mountains or other
areas, etc. to have special events and could provide staff to assist in the
running of the facility or portion of the facility. If you have a facility in
southern or northern california that needs energy or events from a
multidimensional arts organization like ours... please let me know directly at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks for letting me know if you have any information that could help me.
Also, if we haven't yet connected and if I don't yet know about your activities
or organziation, please do feel free to write and say hello and let me know
what your organization or nonprofit are up to and if there are anything my
organization Aha! might be able to help you with!

Best Wishes,
