3) Eco-Fashion Moves Up…

Launched to provide an alternative to chemically treated clothing, the
eco-fashion business has been slow to catch on, and was for years linked to
potato sacks and oddly styled t-shirts. These days, fine natural fabrics made
from organic cotton, wool and linen, tencel (made from wood pulp), hemp,
bamboo, Ingeo (made from corn) and silk are used to create sharp, stylish
outfits. After much experimentation with these materials over the past 15
years, even such household names as Patagonia, Nike and Timberland have
embraced the concept.

4) Brazilian Day at the Market African Place (L.A Coliseum Outside Area)…

Sept. 5/Labor day from at Noon to 7:30pm. The AMP and Soul Brasil magazine
presents a special Brazilian Day with a Brazilian Stage featuring some of the
best Brazilian bands in town plus Afro-Brazilian Dance and Capoeira. The event
is part of the 20th Annual Los Angeles African Market Place/City of Los Angeles

ABOUT THE
WEST AFRICAN HIGHLIFE BAND

The West African Highlife Band brings together an all-star group of
distinguished West African music veterans for a unique celebration of highlife
and
'palmwine' music. Highlife music ruled the scene during the heady era when
independence was achieved by the nations of West Africa, and this band pays
tribute to it with the lilting harmonies and infectious rhythms that motivated
the feet of a generation of African youth. As tradition dictates, each
song’
s lyrics express a humorous but important positive social message to the
community.

Group members have played and toured extensively with their own bands and
with countless distinguished artists, including the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti,
King Sunny Ade, and Hugh Masekela. The atmosphere is intense and intoxicating
as they put forth their rare and beautiful music.
"Highlife music was created to lift us out of our daily troubles, connecting
us with joy and harmony, through the power of music and dance."

MAJEK FASHEK - "Little Patience" New CD now available world wide!
African Reggae star Majek Fashek has been called a prophet and a
poet, and has become one of Africa's greatest singers and musicians
with his powerful world beat sound.

His new album "Little Patience" on the Coral Music Group label is in
many ways Fashek's masterwork - the culmination of his life's
extraordinary journey. With powerful and provocative songs like the
soulful "Power of a Woman," or the inspiring "Someday One Day," it is
a remarkable collection that incorporates Majek's core influences of
Bob Marley, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Jimi Hendrix. He seamlessly
meshes roots, rock, reggae and Afrobeat into a unique signature sound
called "Kpangolo". Majek describes it as "the sound of many cultures
coming together." ------------------- --------------------------------

Subject: afrobeat in ca+co ::FULANIS:: w/ ex-members of Fela Kuti, Spearhead,
Albino & more!

If you’re anywhere near the Sierras or Rockies next week, be sure NOT
to miss these guys...

FULANIS AFROBEAT ENSEMBLE
featuring former members of Fela Kuti, Spearhead, Albino + more!

THU 08/25 RIVER RANCH – TAHOE CITY, CA
                http://www.renegadeshows.com

SAT 08/27 DULCINEA’S 100TH MONKEY – DENVER, CO
                http://www.quixotes.com

SUN 08/28 NEDFEST – NEDERLAND, CO
                http://www.nedfest.com

Led by vocalist Geoffrey Omadhebo (Sonny Okosun, Albino!) and
percussionist Friday Jumbo (Fela Kuti's Africa 70, Albino!), this
Oakland-based, 7-piece all-star ensemble is influenced as much by West African
makossa, highlife, & soukous music, as it is by the fiery musical legacy of
renowned, Nigerian-native afrobeat inventor, Fela Kuti. But it manifests these
influences by bringing its broad
personality to the table, drawing upon the rich amalgam of its member's varied
musical backgrounds to make its rhythm-steeped point. In the short period of
time that has transpired since the group's inception, World-beat & Jamband
lovers alike have latched on the primary ingredient behind this band's truly
broad appeal: Fulanis Afrobeat Ensemble simply brings the house down every
opportunity it gets!

Melding tightly crafted arrangements and nuances of jazz-harmony with
propulsive, high-energy grooves, for the innocent bystander, any quaint
visit to a Fulanis show quickly becomes an all-out body-maneuvering
experience. In addition to Omadhebo and Jumbo, the band is manned by
Manu Dibango's renowned "Soul Makossa" bassist Simon "Soul" Maah (also
known for his work with Sonny Okuson), Cameroonian
afrobeat/highlife/soukous guitar master Didi Afana (Sonny Okosun, Manu
Dibango), Bay Area keyboardist Ramon Lazo (Spearhead), and Fela Kuti's
first trap drummer in the Egypt 80, Jojo Kuo (also known for his work
with Manu Dibango, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, and many others).
