UCLA's Festival of African American Music Oct. 24-Nov. 4
Celebrates Rich Musical Traditions

UCLA will honor music created by African Americans during the Festival of
African American Music from Oct. 24 through Nov. 4. "It's All Connected"
will include rhythm-and-blues, jazz, gospel and other concerts. A symposium
will explore the musical contributions of African Americans and how musical
genres created by African Americans are connected.

All events are free and take place in the Schoenberg Music Building. Parking
costs $8 and is available in Lot 2. (Enter the campus at Hilgard and
Westholme avenues.) Programs are subject to change. For updated information
and confirmation of events, the public may call (310) 825-4023 or visit <
http://www.bunchecenter.ucla.edu/aamf/index.htm
<http://www.bunchecenter.ucla.edu/aamf/index.htm> >.

The festival - sponsored by UCLA's Department of Ethnomusicology, Ralph J.
Bunche Center for African American Studies, Kenny Burrell Archive of African
American Music and Friends of Jazz - is a UCLA Year of the Arts featured
event and part of the Year of African American Music. The UCLArts Web site
has a link to all UCLA Year of the Arts featured events and a downloadable
brochure in PDF format. Log on to < http://www.arts.ucla.edu/

825-8000.

"UCLA has long been a leader in teaching and celebrating African American
music," said professor Kenny Burrell, jazz guitarist and director of the
UCLA Jazz Studies Program. "We are pleased to offer the community this
wonderful opportunity to hear and learn about this significant cultural
heritage."

"The festival will pay tribute to the music African Americans have created
and the rich traditions of African American music in American culture," said
Darnell Hunt, director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American
Studies. "Jazz, blues, hip-hop - all these forms have borrowed from each
other and we will explore these connections."

Winter 2006 activities will include a two-week residency by Regents'
Lecturer Henry Butler, a jazz/blues/classical pianist and vocalist from New
Orleans.

Subject: TOURING: Nawal- Voice of Comoros, CA, OR, & WA USA - Oct 2005

Nawal originally comes from the Comoros Islands, also known as the
"Perfume Islands" or "Islands of the Moon," located in the Indian
Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. Born into a family with many
musicians, Nawal bathed in both popular and spiritual music from a young age.

A descendant of the grand Sufi marabout of Comoros, El-Maarouf
(1852-1904), Nawal is known as "The Voice of Comoros." Indo-Arabian-Persian
music meets Bantu polyphonies, Sufi chants and the syncopated rhythms of the
Indian Ocean. An acoustic roots-based fusion, her music is rhythmically
compelling and beautifully lyrical.

Nawal's trio features Nawal on gambusi/guitar, Idriss Mlanao on
contrabass and Melissa Cara Rigoli on mbira and mixed percussion.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m having problems with my <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> email address;
please only use <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> from now and resend any messages from the

Coming up on BBC 1Xtra:
Afropop – The rise and rise of African hip-hop

Presented by JJC

Nigerian-born, London-based JJC, frontman of Afropean hip-hop outfit JJC & 419
Squad and producer to UK R’n’B stars Jamelia, Liberty X, Big Brovaz and Lemar,
looks at the rise and rise of African hip-hop in this four-part documentary,
Afropop from Wednesday, 2 November 2005 on BBC 1Xtra, broadcast as part of the
TXU programme, 2 – 4pm GMT.

African hip-hop is spreading across the African continent like wildfire. JJC
talks to young Africans about the trials and tribulations of creating music
that reflects their lives in the 21st century. He looks at how the traditional
music of Africa is being morphed and fused with Western hip-hop styles to
create a unique musical movement. From the major label presence of the South
African region to the independent, self-financed productions of the northern
regions, JJC explores the music industry in Africa, highlighting the ways it
compares to the western world. He hears stories from Senegalese hip-hop
superstars Daara J (who won the award for best African group at the World Music
Awards 2004) and Reggie Rockstone, the inventor of hip-life in Ghana, to the
ghetto realism of Kenya’s Ukooflani Mau Mau Camp (part of the 38-strong
collective Nairobi Yetu). He also learns about Arabic hip-hop acts like
Moroccan group H Kayne through to the established music industry in South
Africa which is ruled by acts like Zola, Godessa and Bongo Maffin.

He also looks at the relationship between youthful rebellion and parental
disapproval and the clash between old and new African sentimentalities. JJC
learns about the opposition that musicians face from politicians and policemen.
He also discusses the sometimes unique language and content of young stars’
music, whether rapping about HIV/AIDS or political corruption or simply how
they just want to dance; and the difference between rappers who celebrate their
personal wealth and those who use their music for protest.

The story of Afropop is the story of a new African youth.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS!
ASIA PACIFIC PERFORMANCE EXCHANGE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
APPEX 2006

UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance (CIP)
Department of World Arts and Cultures (WAC)

July 3 to August 11, 2006 - Los Angeles, CA
Deadline for submissions: November 10, 2005

APPEX
The Asia Pacific Performance Exchange (APPEX) is an international musicians
and artists residency program that promotes cross-cultural and
interdisciplinary understanding; develops rigorous strategies for art-making
reflecting the nuances of cultural differences; and fosters new ways to
experiment, collaborate, and interpret artistic expression. Since its
inception in 1995, APPEX has brought together more than 100 traditional and
contemporary musicians and performing
<http://www.wac.ucla.edu/cip/appex/biosartists.htm> artists from throughout
Asia -- from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea,
Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam -- and the United States for intensive
residency sessions on the campus of the University of California, Los
Angeles (UCLA).
The rich, interactive workshop environment
<http://www.wac.ucla.edu/cip/appex/workshop.htm> of APPEX provides
musicians and artists with the opportunity to expand their aesthetic range
through exposure to new performance practices and approaches to creative
production. APPEX Fellows develop the ability to collaborate across
discipline and culture; learn mutual and self-reflective critical
techniques; and initiate life-long friendships and professional networks.
The successful format of APPEX demonstrates how cross-cultural collaboration
can provide musicians and dancers with a more informed understanding of Asia
and America as well as valuable insights into their own world view.

THE PROGRAM

APPEX is a six-week intensive residency on the campus of UCLA. For five days
a week, artists will engage in all-day master classes, studio workshops,
experimentation, and collaborative projects. On weekends and evenings,
participants will be introduced to the vibrant arts and culture context of
the host city through specially planned field trips and concerts. Each
Fellow will be provided with travel expenses, shared accommodations, and
meals for the duration of the residency.

WHO SHOULD APPLY
Traditional and contemporary performing artists from the United States and
Asia (India, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia) are invited to apply. Special
care will be given in the selection process to ensure a balance across
disciplines. Artists who are active in the community as educators, artistic
directors, and cultural workers are encouraged to apply.

APPEX 2006 is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of State
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the Ford Foundation.
