DAY OF REMEMBRANCE/DAY OF HEALING
Los Angeles THE NIGERIAN TALKING DRUM ENSEMBLE is back! After a two-year
hiatus they will resume the Day of Remembrance/Day of Healing performance,
directed by Francis Awe. Come witness this unique production at the Los Angeles
Theatre Center on Saturday November 19, 2005, at 8:00pm. Admission is $15.00 in
advance and $20.00 at the door.
The Day of Remembrance/Day of Healing is not only a high octane African music
and dance presentation, it is also a spiritual experience. The intention this
year is to honor, respect, and recognize the necessity to live in harmony with
nature. During this past year there have been numerous catastrophic natural
disasters: hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and fires. These have traumatically
affected many parts of the world and many people. This very special Day of
Remembrance/Day of Healing performance will be dedicated to the earth and our
connection to it. It is a reminder for all of us to get back in touch with our
Divine Nature It is folly to use all of earths resources and then disregard
it. In addition, the culture of materialism entices us away from nature. We
need to take a step back - to acknowledge our interconnectedness with others
and the universe. We will take a step forward to live in peace with our fellow
man as well as with nature.
Francis Awe states, My music goes beyond entertainment. It is a revelation of
hidden myths. I am interested in using this medium to unify people of all races
and colors. This mission evidences results in the drummers and dancers who
will take the stage on November 19. The cast consists of people from all over
the world. They are different colors, different races, different ages; they
speak different languages and have different spiritual beliefs. All come
together on this day to celebrate the Oneness of humanity. Omowale Orisayomi,
the assistant director says, If we can come together on the stage and create
peace, harmony and unity, then surely this is an indication that it can happen
in the world, if we all just work together.
For more information call Francis Awe at: (323) 294-7445.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, October 31, 2005, - World Class Afro Cuban Timba Jazz
group "AC TIMBA JAZZ PROJECT" will be performing at the "CATALINA BAR & GRILL"
in Hollywood! This great performance will take place on Tuesday November 22,
2005. Show times are 8:30 and 10:00 pm.
AC Timba Jazz will be performing at the "Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood, to
record their next live CD and prepare for their showcase at the IAJE
(International Association Jazz Education) Conference in New York. Formed by
late great Cuban Percussionist Long John Oliva, the AC Timba's sound is nothing
like you have ever heard before. The music is pure, progressive, uplifting,
energetic and full of life!
Juan Sanchez Oliva aka Long John, who was born and raised in the "Belen Barrio"
of Havana, Cuba, was probably one of the most talented, least accredited and
most complicated percussionists of our time and his. He was a true master in
not only Afro
Cuban rhythms, but in ALL forms of percussion. After spending 20 years
performing Worldwide with many greats such as, Willie Bobo, Dizzy Gillespie,
Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D' Rivera, he formed one of the most innovative Afro
Cuban Jazz Groups of all time, the
"AC Timba Jazz Project."
The bittersweet twist to this story is that Long John was not here long enough
to enjoy his group's success. On June 21st, 2004, Long John passed away in his
home. Almost 3 weeks after his passing, on July 10, 2004, his memory was
honored when "The AC Timba Jazz
Project" (without their leader), was named the "2003-2004 KJZZ 88.1 FM's Latin
Jazz Artists of the Year", winning the World Famous, "Long Beach Jazz Search
Competition", two years in a row, accomplishing a goal that Long John could
only dream about. Shortly
thereafter, the "AC Timba Jazz" performed his tunes in his honor at the world
famous, "Long Beach Jazz Festival".
Today, the AC Timba Jazz continues to carry out Long John's musical legacy,
dedicating their creative talents and continuous hard work to their Band
Leader; friend and Brother, Eternally. "LONG JOHN". "Ibaé Tonu Abure" (which in
the language of Lucumi means, "Rest In Peace Brother").
Catalina Bar & Grill has certainly lived up to its slogan "Nothing But The Best
In Jazz" by presenting a veritable Who's Who of jazz legends such as Dizzie
Gillespie, Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Ray Brown, Joe Williams, Max
Roach, Carmen McRae, Betty
Carter, Ron Carter, Joe Henderson, Benny Carter, Tony Williams, Joe Zawinul,
Marcus Miller, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Michael
Brecker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jimmy Scott and many more. This supper club, with
its Old World charm provides a warm and inviting environment for its guest,
while enjoying a superb meal and
great live jazz.
Catalina Bar & Grill is located at 6725 Sunset Boulevard Hollywood, California
90028, for dinner reservation or ticket purchase please contact:

Subject: Ashley Maher - 4th album available at last! - Flying Over Bridges
Dear Friends,
My fourth CD, Flying Over Bridges, is finally available after 14 months of
intricate tinkering. Produced by brilliant Cameroonian producer/bassist, Andre
Manga, it features Los Angeles' finest world/jazz musicians from Cameroon,
Senegal, Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, and the USA.
Building from my first three CDs, Flying Over Bridges is a rich, rhythmic,
personal, heady brew. It has already been described as "a beautiful,
masterful, soaring achievement," "uplifting," "like listening to distilled
sunlight," "new," "deeply moving," "an A+." Fans have emailed, "The minute it
finishes, I want to play it again," and that it's "a world class album from
start to finish." And that's all in one week!
My first 1000 copies came through the door last week and have been flying out
the door ever since. One Very Dear Friend and her mom bought 30 to give as
Christmas gifts. Another in New York bought 20. I am one very blessed artiste
indeed!
To buy a copy, go to http://www.ashleymaher.com then click on "Buy CDs" for
simple instructions.
To buy multiple copies (for Christmas, for your family, for your dog, for
everyone you know!)
email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can work out a discounted price.
I can't wait for you to hear this music!
Lots of love,
Ashley
P.S. (You can stop reading now, if you like... However, if you just sat down
with a cup of coffee and are in the mood for a story about how Flying Over
Bridges came to be, read on! Also, if you would like to help me "get the
record out there!" that is also below.)
The Story
This album means a lot to me. Three weeks after I completed my last record, The
Blessed Rain, in London, my mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I moved
with my husband and son back to Los Angeles to care for her until she passed
away and, afterwards, decided to stay. Then our daughter arrived and for the
last few years I've been merrily juggling music, motherhood, marriage, and
money. Building from Border's Bookstore acoustic shows to clubs to big venues
and festivals across the States, it's been a busy and rich time for developing
onstage relationships with the LA's best world musicians, singers, drummers,
and dancers ... and for writing new material.
This record is perhaps my most personal to date. The song "Lucky" is about my
husband returning to Africa and valuing it so much more after years in the
West. "Sundiata" is about our son moving into adolescence, emboldened by the
cultural mix within himself. "Gracefully" is an ode to my mum and her brave
journey to the other side. "Club Dibango and the Rising Son" is inspired by
Andre Manga's story of Manu Dibango taking him under his wing when he was a
young bassist in Cameroon.
Finally, last year, with a big backlog of songs, countless emails from fans all
over the world asking me "WHEN is your next album coming out?," and this
incredible band, I asked Andre if he'd be interested in producing a record on a
shoestring budget. When he said "I'm in!" I was thrilled.
>From that point on, I couldn't believe my good fortune. It felt like magic.
>Every world class musician I invited to record agreed to perform for a reduced
>fee. The brilliant Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Joni Mitchell, Every Great Artist
>You Can Imagine) played drums. Youssou NDour's guitarist, Jimi MBaye, was in
>town and played guitar on "Sundiata." Piano genius Otmaro Ruiz
(Venezuela) pushed the whole sound into a new dimension with his wondrous
playing.
And Andre Manga's boundless talent and taste as a
producer/multi-instrumentalist/engineer blew me away every day we were in the
studio. He is incredible!
The recording, the mixing, and the mastering studios were all supportive and
generous with their valuable time, too. It has truly been a labor of love
from every angle. The quality of the music is so extraordinary, it really
should have cost ten times what it did. I am SO grateful to everyone who
contributed!
Ways You Can Help
The next chapter, for me, will be an all-out push to get this music
recognized alongside artists like Sade, Nora Jones, India Arie, Paul Simon,
Peter Gabriel, and, yes, even Queen Joni. It feels like The Circle has turned
and my time has come.
If any of you have ideas to help ... people you know who are at quality record
labels, managers, agents, radio and marketing, publicity people, etc., please
contact me about them and visa versa. Every recommendation, every meeting,
phone call, email counts, and I really appreciate your input.
Also, feel free to email me your feedback on the record. Good quotes are
always useful for the website/publicity and feedback can only make me a wiser
and smarter artist.
With Big Love, Big Blessings, and Copious Gratitude,
Ashley

Subject: Hello Artists! want to live at a nice facility in the gorgeous
mountains?
Hello!
If you have not yet heard, Artists Helping Artists (Aha!) has the potential
of obtaining a one-acre facility in an incredibly beautiful portion of the
Santa Cruz mountains starting Dec 1, 2005 or Jan 1, 2006. This will be a
creative
haven of inspiration, innovation and imagination. At 3300 square foot, this
facility is surrounded by gorgeous pines and redwoods and mountains. We look to
have about 8 to 10 artists and visionaries living at this center. Other artists
would be regularly visiting our events, salons and conferences throughout the
Spring and Summer of 2006. And others will be staying for weekends or a week
at a time for brief retreats and enjoy both the natural and creative wonders
that will be the Aha! Center. More details on the Aha! Center and how to get
involved is below.
If we obtain this facility, various artists and innovators and I will be
moving there to live right around Jan 1, 2006. We have about 6 or 7 artists
now.
We are looking for another 2 to 3 more creatives who align to the Aha! vision
and who want to be part of a purposeful and visionary community. If you are
someone who recognizes the value of surrounding oneself with creative vision
and
natural beauty, and have the freedom to join us, please let me know as soon as
possible.
Cheers!
Glenn Horton
Founder of Artists Helping Artists (Aha!)

GENERAL INFO ABOUT THE LOCATION
Here is some key information about the general area there in Santa Cruz
County and the proximity to landmarks and towns.
1) The general location of the site is 20 miles from Santa Cruz and about 50
miles from San Jose International Airport. More specifically the location is
about 2 miles from the tip of Henry Cowled Redwoods State Park and about 8
miles from Big Basin Redwoods State Park.
2) The closest town to the location is about 7 miles and that is Ben Lomond
(about 3000 people). If you go down another road it is about 8 miles to Boulder
Creek (about 6000 people). Santa Cruz is about 20 miles away.
MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE CENTER
1) The facility is on an acre of land. The acre lot is loaded with pines and
other larger trees and the whole mountain region is loaded with large
redwoods. The closest town to the facility is about is 8 miles away and has
3000
people, big health food / grocery store and restaurants and other markets.
2) It is a 6 bedroom estate with 3300 square feet and it is on a full acre.
It looks like an Inn and there about 7 of entrances into the facility.
3) The facility itself was built in 1990 and is in very, very nice shape and
is not in need of any repairs, painting, etc. It has been kept up very well!
4) Downstairs -- There is a large double garage, a large bedroom with a large
private bathroom and shower, a good sized living room, a second bedroom, a
nice kitchen and nice dining room / den area..... all downstairs. (Also a
washer
and drier hook up in side... a solar (primary for hot water) with a secondary
(propane for hot water). There is a large wood stove for heating.
5) Upstairs -- There are five regular bedrooms, two more bathrooms, a very
large office space / room and an extra kitchen and den / lounge area... all
upstaris. The upstairs also has a nice balcony going all the way along two
sides
of the facilty and oversees the land, the trees, etc.
6) The facility has a lot of charm to it in that it has some small sculpted
furniture -- water sculptures flowing, and is nicely painted and some nice
garden and fencing, etc. (You'll see when you get there) We will have artists
living there bring up various beautiful pieces of outdoor art pieces and
additional sculptures, etc.
7) It also has two small rooms / out-buildings about 100 feet from the home
that could potentially be used for workshop space or special meditation or
creative rooms or arts / metaphsical library or computer room. There are a few
other sheds on the property.
8) There is a large pool that sits in a big redwood deck. There is also a hot
tub on the property. There is adequate parking too.
DOES THIS VISION MAKE YOUR HEART PUMP?
If you have any doubts about the Aha! vision or the community and want to
know if you should be there.... please go to
http://www.artistshelpingartists.org/community.htm and read what it is about.
If you read the purposes and vision
there, and your heart is not pumping with excitement to go (at least a little
bit) then you probably should not get ready to go. If you have lots of things
keeping you pinned down to your current life, you should also not go. But if
you get excited about a future vision and being part of it then you should work
out how you can do it!!! (If this is not for you but fits a friend better,
then please pass this on.)
WANT TO LIVE NEAR BEAUTY AND LOTS OF CREATIVITY???
If you are interested in living at the site and can arrange to be there by
Dec 1, 2005 or possibly Jan 1, 2006 please email me and let me know as soon as
possible. We already have a remarkable mix of visionaries and lively creative
spirits coming... including fine artists, musicians, healers, and
multi-talented creatives... most have their own business or creative projects
too.

Musicians, Dancers, Puppeteers, theater artists
ASIA PACIFIC PERFORMANCE EXCHANGE RESIDENCY APPEX 2006
UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance (CIP)
Department of World Arts and Cultures (WAC)
July 3 to August 11, 2006 - UCLA campus, Los Angeles, CA
Deadline for submissions: Extended Deadline December 1 2005
APPEX
The Asia Pacific Performance Exchange (APPEX) is an international musicians
and artists residency program that promotes cross-cultural and
interdisciplinary understanding; develops rigorous strategies for art-making
reflecting the nuances of cultural differences; and fosters new ways to
experiment, collaborate, and interpret artistic expression. Since its
inception in 1995, APPEX has brought together more than 100 traditional and
contemporary <http://www.wac.ucla.edu/cip/appex/biosartists.htm> musicians
and performing artists from throughout Asia -- from Bangladesh, Cambodia,
China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam --
and the United States for intensive residency sessions on the campus of the
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
The rich, interactive <http://www.wac.ucla.edu/cip/appex/workshop.htm>
workshop environment of APPEX provides musicians and artists with the
opportunity to expand their aesthetic range through exposure to new
performance practices and approaches to creative production. APPEX Fellows
develop the ability to collaborate across discipline and culture; learn
mutual and self-reflective critical techniques; and initiate life-long
friendships and professional networks. The successful format of APPEX
demonstrates how cross-cultural collaboration can provide musicians and
dancers with a more informed understanding of Asia and America as well as
valuable insights into their own world view.
THE PROGRAM
APPEX is a six-week intensive residency on the campus of UCLA. For five days a
week, artists will engage in all-day master classes, studio workshops,
experimentation, and collaborative projects. On weekends and evenings,
participants will be introduced to the vibrant arts and culture context of the
host city through specially planned field trips and concerts. Each Fellow will
be provided with travel expenses, shared accommodations, and meals for the
duration of the residency.
WHO SHOULD APPLY
Traditional and contemporary performing artists from the United States and
India, Indonesia, Philippines & Malaysia are invited to apply. Special care
will be given in the selection process to ensure a balance across disciplines.
Artists who are active in the community as educators, artistic directors, and
cultural workers are encouraged to apply.
APPEX 2006 is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of State Bureau
of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the Ford Foundation.

UCLALive presents
Youssou N'Dour's Egypt
Featuring Fathy Salama's Cairo Orchestra
"N'Dour has created a musical context that's as large with possibilities as his
sinuous, spine tingling singing." -Rolling Stone
Dubbed "the West African Sinatra" (Newsday), the Senegalese singer YOUSSOU
N'DOUR is one of the world's most universally appealing musicians, combining
African musical traditions with world-pop inspiration. This remarkable
concert, based on his recent rapturously reviewed release Egypt, combines
N'Dour's divine vocals and Senegalese rhythms with the hauntingly lush
orchestral arrangements of Egyptian and Arabian devotional music resulting in
"a statement of trans-Saharan African unity, a profession of Islamic faith and,
most of all, a
collection of humble, loving affirmations, with strings shadowing and
fluttering
around N'Dour's exquisite vocals"
SAT 12 Nov 2005 8pm
