Baghawan Ciptoning, Indonesia

approach to faith and fantasy. He draws inspiration and technique from the
ceremonial Javanese court dance and richly layers it with imagination and an
intimate knowledge of martial arts. Recipient of numerous honors, Ciptoning
is an acclaimed teacher at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI).

Chey Chankethya, Cambodia
Meditative and mesmerizing, Chankethya's dance has the ability to lift the
spirit to realms above. In a country that is still rebuilding itself after
the destruction of the Khmer Rouge, Chankethya is devoted to the recovery of
Cambodian dance and culture. She is among the new generation of dancers to
be trained by Phnom Penh's Royal University of Fine Arts.
Umesh Shetty, Malaysia
Award winning dancer and choreographer Umesh Shetty brings fresh ideas to
performance whether the work is a traditional "Allaripu" or a choreographic

Subject: [Afro Funké] 1/26 special NextAid Fundraiser with DJs JAMIE STRONG &
EGON (Stonesthrow!!)
Last week was another beautiful one!
...thanks to DJ Fisher P, Marwan on percussion,
Quintin invoking the spirits through his dances,
and over 250 extended family members in the room!
The momentum of Afro Funké has been building so steadily,
that we couldn't have asked for a better time to host this
coming Thursday's AIDS Fundraiser, with an outrageous line-up!
This Thursday is the one that we have to pull everyone out for,
as we come together to raise funds for the orphans of Africa.
On these special nights, hopefully everyone can help spread
the word, and come with a group of friends so we can truly
make a difference.
Thank you!

Subject: Seeking African and Ballet dancers!
Hi All,
I am a graduate film student at USC and I am making a visual effects
dance film and am looking for dancers that have a strong background in
both ballet and African dance. Rehearsals will start second week of
February and the shoot will take place the first weekend in March. I
am interested in high energy and synchronicity, and I want to
experiment with movements that reinforce the story. The dancers should
be interested in new technology since we will be utilizing motion
capture and shooting in front of a green screen.
Please send inquiries and photos to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hope to hear from you!

Dear Friends!
We hope you all had a good start into the new year! The Berlin winter is
arctic but sunny prizes and carnival season keep us warm and PIRANHA's
spring programme is in full swing.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. STELLA CHIWESHE'S NEW DOUBLE-CD COINCIDES WITH HER WINNING TWO ZIMA
AWARDS
Congratulations to the Queen of Mbira! Just in time for Stella
Chiweshe's brand-new double CD, her lifetime work has been awarded by
winning the ZIMA Awards (Zimbabwe Music Silver Jubilee Awards) in the
two categories "Best female mbira player of 2005" and "Most Outstanding
Female Contribution to the Music Industry".
Stella Chiweshe was the first PIRANHA recording artist way back in 1987.
On her first double album she is travelling on one path in two
directions. In her Trance Hits, she journeys through the world of her
ancestors, preserving their traditions. With her Classic Hits she
revisits the urban streets in Harare and calls on the younger,
westernised generation to take pride in their own culture. This 100th
PIRANHA release includes 10 new titles and 12 re-released ones, with
productions of John Peel, Ben Mandelson, Colin Bass and a special guest
appearance of the rhythm section of the 3 Mustaphas 3.
Stella Chiweshe: Double Check. Two Sides of Zimbabwe's Mbira Queen.

2. MAURICE EL MEDIONI'S UPCOMING CD MAKES SONGLINES' TOP OF THE WORLD
Raï pioneer and grandmaster of the PianOriental from Oran, Algeria, is a
childhood hero of Khaled and featured guest on his last studio album.
Latin super-drummer Roberto Rodriguez from Havana, Cuba, already played
with everyone from Miami Sound Machine to Lester Bowie and Cachao, via
Joe Jackson and John Zorn. On invitation of PIRANHA Musik they met in
New York for a Descarga Oriental, dreaming of roots that never were. An
instant classic, outstanding and full of surprises which made it
immediately to one of Songlines TOP OF THE WORLD position in their
upcoming March/April issue (publication date 17 Feb). As the CD will
only be released in March (GAS/UK) you can have a first taste on the free
CD that comes with the mag.

York Sessions. CD-PIR2003 Release-date GAS 10 Mar 2006.

3. THE ULTIMATE JEWISH CONSPIRACY
Remember where you read it first! It needed a Frank London to reveal to
the world that Carnival is the ultimate Jewish conspiracy. Was this the
reason why his new CD "Carnival Conspiracy" was instantly garnished with
the TOP OF THE WORLD recommendation of Songlines? Why do we receive a
tsunami of enthusiastic reviews floating our office? If you have missed
his APAP showcase in New York last weekend, come to Porto Musical in
Recife/Brazil for his pre-carnival performances and find out more what it
is all about. Other answers in "Party Until You Are Beyond Rationality",

4. WMCE TOP 6 FOR BOBAN MARKOVIC ORKESTAR feat. MARKO MARKOVIC
Boban Markovic's recent release "The Promise" is steadily advancing from
#10 in Dec to #6 in Jan in the World Music Charts Europe (WMCE):
"Serbian superstar Boban Markovic and his Orkestar once again feature
the leader's 17 year-old son on trumpet, and a fine addition it is, as
his silvery tone floats above the gruff rhythms of the band. Tunes range
from slow and sleazy to uptempo and frantic, as the nimble-tongued brass
band trawl through their Balkan/gypsy heritage while taking in a few
