Park this summer!

2006 21ST ANNUAL AFRICAN MARKETPLACE & CULTURAL FAIRE
RETURNS TO RANCHO CIENEGA PARK
(LOS ANGELES, July 2006) --- The Los Angeles African Marketplace & Cultural
Faire (Cultural Faire) will return to its former location of Rancho Cienega
Park, the location that has been a big part of the history and success of this
internationally recognized celebration of African Diaspora themed cultural and
commercial enterprises showcasing art and culture, travel and trade. Through
the collective purpose of Africans, African Americans, Caribbeans, Latin,
Native Americans, Mexicans, Pacific Islanders and Asians whose roots are of
Africa descent, the Cultural Faire restores vibrancy to urban communities and
fosters the appreciation of cultures that are connected to the Diaspora.
Cultural Faire organizers have announced the 2006 three-weekend schedule with
the annual opening Gala African Ball and kickoff event on Friday, August 18th ,
to be held at Rancho Cienega; followed by three consecutive weekends of the
Cultural Faire: August 19-20, August 25-27 and September 4-6. A special Youth
Day Celebration will be held on Friday, August 25th with a special focus on
Foster Children.
"We are delighted to have the support Councilman Herb Wesson, and Councilman
Bernard Parks and Councilwoman Jan Perry, along with the support of the
Department of Recreation and Parks and the Department of Cultural Affairs as
our partners in presenting the 2006 edition of the Cultural Faire" said Meta
Williams, Chief Operating Officer of f African Marketplace Inc. "Without the
support of the city along with our loyal vendors, performers and participants
from over fifty countries this production would not be possible and certainly
would not have lasted for 21 years."
The 2006 Celebration of African Diaspora Cultures will continue to highlight
diverse cultures including the Brazilian Festival; Doo Wop and Big Band Swing,
Square Dance and African Dance workshops; the Ugandan Festival; Blues, Funk,
Hip Hop and Reggae; Festivals for Belize, Haiti and the Cameroon; the
Gospelfest; a Salsa Festival; the Wholistic Village; South African music and
dance; Literary Village; Ethiopian Day; Nation's Cup Tennis Tournament; and
Wearable Art Shows. Cultural Faire visitors will be able to choose from a
dynamic group of merchants selling fine art, crafts, clothing and other unique
products from around the world while the signature food court will offer the
best international cuisine from exciting caterers and local restaurants.
"With the opening of new offices in Leimert Park and our return to Rancho
Cienega Park, this is an exciting time for the African Marketplace" says
founder and board member James Burks, also an executive with the Department of
Cultural Affairs. "After more than 20 years of creating strategic alliances and
developing the African Marketplace brand, it is now in a position to expand its
presence as one of the premier cultural organizations in California."
The African Marketplace, Inc. has partnered with the City of San Francisco and
Lennar Communities in preparation for the construction of the first permanent
Pan African World Trade, Entertainment and Cultural Center in the United
States. It will be constructed as part of revitalization of Bayview Hunters
Point, a traditionally African American community in San Francisco, and the
salvage of the 540 acre Naval Shipyard that lies next to the community but has
been dormant since 1964.
"The design and development of the African Marketplace over the past 20 years
is the result of this Bay Area project. We are pleased that cities around the
world are beginning to recognize the value of Pan African Cultures and the
economic potential in the global African Diaspora community."
The Annual Los Angeles African Marketplace & Cultural Faire was selected by the
American Bus Association (ABA) as one of the "Top 100 Events in North America
in 1996 and 2003." It is a nonprofit cultural event and is produced by the
African Marketplace, Inc. Corporations and businesses that are interested in
participating as sponsors as well as arts & crafts vendors, and volunteers
should contact the office of the African Marketplace, Inc. at (323) 293-1612 or

3. Drumcircle Finder Update & Free mp3 from the Ultimate Live DrumCircl
Posted by: "shannon" [EMAIL PROTECTED] n0jams
Date: Fri Aug 4, 2006 3:04 pm (PDT)
Hi All, Any drumcircle updates for my drum circle finder, please let
me know.
Also, there is a free 6 minute mp3 from the 2 CD set you can listen
to from The Ultimate Live Drum Circle. If you like it enough and wish
to buy them and hear it all, the double CD set is $10.
Here is the url to hear it and check it out:
http://www.drumcircles.net/ultimate%20drum%20circle.html
Here's a description:
At long last, after two years in the making, the ultimate drum circle
2 CD set is completed. This is truly the best of the best. Each CD is
filled to the brim, at over 70 minutes long each. There is over two
and a half hours total to listen to in all. All are separate tracks
averaging about 8 minutes each. Plenty of time so you can relax, and
settle into a good groove.
These live recordings vary from grooving, meditative, and passionate,
right on up to riveting, rocking, and exciting. They are some of the
most enjoyable drum circle musical pieces I have ever participated
in, in my life, and I have been attending drum circles for some 20
years now. They are all here in one massive collection. You will hear
some drummers doing call and response, and many other magical things
going on. You can hear and feel how much fun, and excitement everyone
is having. I promise you, you're going to love this drum circle
double CD set. None of it was planned out. It is just the way it
happened, and it all sounds great. You can hear a 6 minute sample by
clicking on the link above. It's compressed to an mp3 (96kbs) so it
will load faster. It's 4MB in size.
There is real variety of drumming on these 2 CD's. And, lot's of
different kinds of drums as well. Probably every kind of drum I think
I've ever seen, talking drums, djembes, doumbeks, ashikos, and taiko
drums just to name a few, and all kinds of smaller percussion items.
Many of the typical things like claves, tambourines, a-gogo & salsa
bells, shakers, rainsticks, pangi nuts, finger cymbals, guiros,
maracas, and wind chimes. Also unusual smaller percussion items, like
a jingle cane, vibra slaps, thunder tubes, vibra tones, flex a tones,
triangles, gongs, frottoirs, finger pianos, washboards, and all kinds
of other crazy things accompanying the hand drumming.
As to the rhythms themselves, there's all different kinds of them.
African, and Afro-Cuban, Latin, Funk, Taiko, Greek, Egyptian, 6/8
shuffles, and many more that were just made up on the spot. There is
lots of variety, and with many different musicians taking the
spotlight and soloing here and there. Some of them are simply
scintillating to witness. If you enjoy hand drumming at drum circles,
I think you will find these most entertaining. It's hard to stop
listening once you pop one of these CD's in. These are the kind of
drum circle jams that make you want to pick up a drum and jam along,
or get on out to a drum circle toot sweet.
On 5 or 6 of the tracks there's wood flutes and didgeridoos in there
with the drumming. The light sounding wood flute adds a hint of
melody floating over the drum beat, and the didgeridoo adds a sort of
a bass to the bottom. It really sounds great. On a couple of tracks
there is an electric flute in there doing some amazing echoing
sounds. There's a few chants, some hoots and hollers, plus a few
jungle calls in there for good measure. People did that because they
were just having a good time, and wanted to express themselves. There
was a number of dancers on each occasion driving the drummersto
heightened levels of excitement, and vice versa.
All these musical pieces were done by myself, and a number of top
notch hand drummers and percussionists using professional recording
equipment. These CD's capture the unplanned spontaneity one
experiences at a drum circle. Many have said, these are indeed the
ultimate drum circle double CD set.
Give the clip a listen, and I think you'll see what I mean.
Thanks,

6. Happy Birthday Stella Chiweshe, Caversham, Reading, UK: SUN 30 July
Posted by: "Piranha Musik" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Fri Aug 4, 2006 3:06 pm (PDT)
STELLA CHIWESHE CELEBRATES HER 60th BIRTHDAY WITH HER WOMAD READING CONCERT
Piranha Musik is proud and happy to wish Stella
Chiweshe, the Queen of Mbira, all the best for her 60th birthday!
Safe and sound, she is proud of her age: "I am so
happy that I have reached 60 years. I waited and
could not believe it when it finally happened.
Why? Because when I was a teenager 30 years were
as far as heaven to reach and now I'm 60."
And she is definitely alive and kicking, right
now on tour in the UK, with the Grande Finale at
WOMAD Reading on 30 July. For this special
occasion her live band of 6 will include Colin
Bass aka Sabah of 3 Mustaphas 3 on bass guitar.
"When you hear Stella Chiweshe perform, you are
swept away. Swept away by the majesty of the
striking otherworldly figure onstage, by the
mesmeric power of her mbira and by her voice -
now a whisper, now full-throated and soaring -
welling up from deep within her Shona soul." (Songlines June 2006)
Stella was the first Piranha recording artist way
back in 1987. And just in time for Piranha's
100th release Stella's first double album
appeared early this year: In her Trance Hits she
journeys through the world of her ancestors,
preserving their traditions. With her Classic
Hits she revisits the urban streets in Harare and
calls on the younger, westernized generation to
take pride in their own culture, including
productions of John Peel, Ben Mandelson, Colin
Bass and a special guest appearance of the rhythm section of the 3 Mustaphas 3.
"It's trance music, but in the oldest sense of
the word, setting up hypnotic rhythms that lull." (Sing Out!)
"An ideal introduction or summary-to-date from a singular artist." (The Beat)
BIOGRAPHY
Born 1946 in Mujumhi, a village in Mhondoro
Zimbabwe, the woman now known by her people as
Ambuya Chinyakare (Grandmother of Traditional
Music) has had to struggle hard every step of the
way to becoming her true self, the Queen of
Mbira. The colonial power, Britain, had banned
the mbira during the first war of liberation, the
Church told her that it was the work of the
Devil, even her own people told her that it was
taboo, an instrument that a woman could never
play. Yet by the mid-sixties, she had become
recognised as a gifted maridzambira, playing at
healing ceremonies, weddings, funerals, concerts
and parties and her debut single, Kasahwa, had
gone gold. After Zimbabwean independence in 1980,
she joined the National Dance Company and toured
throughout Zimbabwe, Mozambique and then
Australia, India, North Korea and Europe.
Since 1987 she has been on a continual tour of
Europe, North America and Zimbabwe. So far she's
recorded 22 local singles and 7 international
albums, became the first Zimbabwean female mbira
player to gain international recognition, been
awarded an MA from Harare University, won two
ZIMA Awards in 2005 plus the National Arts Merit
Awards from the National Arts Council in Zimbabwe
early this year and healed countless troubled souls. (Max Reinhard)

The Reggae trifecta: three great LA-area Reggae groups in one great night! The
Aggrolites came together rather by accident when five musicians from two
different groups were backing the great Jamaican ska singer Derrick Morgan on
an album. Reflecting the love for rocksteady, ska and Reggae in Southern
California, this new fusion of two bands hits on something truly authentic,
with classic keyboard riffing and swinging horn-filled rhythms.
August 10 - SALIF KEITA, ASHLEY MAHER & HER BIG GLOBAL BAND, African pop and
traditional music Known as the "Golden Voice of Mali", multiple Grammy-nominee
Salif Keita successfully fuses traditional African music with contemporary
Western styles - funk, rap and pop. Delighting audiences from New York to Paris
since his humble
beginnings in Djoliba, Salif now stands solidly in the center of the
Afro-pop music scene.
Ashley Maher is a true new global diva. Following in the footsteps of
pioneers like Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon, and sounding like Joni Mitchell
meets Youssou NDour, Ashley has recorded four world class albums. Stellar
songwriting, her extraordinary voice, and heavenly world grooves put Ashley in
a class all her own: sublime world/folk/jazz.
August 17 - INTI-ILLIMANI, Chilean Super Group
For four decades, Inti-Illimani's music has intoxicated audiences around the
globe. Wedded in traditional Latin American roots and playing on more than 30
wind, string and percussion instruments, Inti-Illimani's compositions are a
treasure for the human spirit.
August 24 - KIRAN AHLUWALIA, w/ DJ didJital and eccodek and visuals by Amanda
Boggs, The Sound of India, today! Kiran Ahluwalia is an Indo-Canadian singer
who has devoted much of her life to learning the art of Indian vocal music and
in particular gazhal, a poetic
song form that arrived in India since the fourteenth century. Trained in
classical Indian singing, she found herself drawn to the ghazal form and folk
songs of Punjab, her family's home region. The ghazal is a challenging form
featuring both structure and improvisation. Accompanied by tabla, guitar and
harmonium,
Kiran adds the drone of the tanpura to her voice to fill out an ensemble
capable of both delicacy and power. She is likely one of the only composers and
performers of gahzal in the Western Hemisphere.
August 31 - DAVID GRISMAN, STEPHANE WREMBEL, Dawg Music and Gypsy Jazz! For
more than 40 years, mandolinist/composer David Grisman has been busy creating
"dawg" music, a blend of many stylistic influences (including swing, bluegrass,
latin, jazz and gypsy) so unique he gave it its own name. Known widely for his
work with Jerry Garcia and many other artists, David has inspired a whole new
genre of acoustic string instrumental music with style and virtuosity while
creating a unique niche for himself in the world of
contemporary music.
French guitarist Stephane Wrembel may not be a gypsy by definition, but his
music has all the nostalgia, joy and jangle of a true gypsy musician; an
impressionist landscape of the Bohemian lifestyle.
Stephane Wrembel takes us to the gypsy camp to dance around the campfire with
the same sense of freedom, abandon and vitality as the gypsies.
About the Twilight Dance Series
The Twilight Dance Series has been a Southern California tradition for
twenty-two years. After severe storms damaged the Pier in 1983, the newly
formed Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation and the Santa Monica Arts
Commission decided to put together a series of concerts to raise awareness
about the restoration project and build community spirit.
Putting together a small amount of seed money to start the event, the City
staged the first concerts under a large blue and white tent dubbed "The
LaMonica" after the ballroom that graced the Pier from the late 1930s to the
early 1960s. Long-time friend of the Pier Katharine King named the concerts the
Twilight Dance Series and the moniker stuck.
The 22nd Annual Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series presented by Amoeba
Records begins on June 29 and will run through August 31, 2006. For ten
Thursday evenings during the summer starting at 7:30 p.m., prepare to sing,
dance, or just rock out to the best in Reggae, folk, rock and eclectic world
music.
Admission is and has always been free!
Directions
Parking on the Pier is limited on Thursday nights, so walk, ride a bike, or
take the Big Blue Bus to the Pier and avoid delays while keeping you and our
planet healthy! If you drive, parking is available in the 2030 Barnard Way lot,
a four to six-minute walk from the concert. To reach the lot from the 10
Freeway, take
the 4th/5th Street Exit and stay to the left. Turn left onto 4th Street. Turn
right on Pico and head west past Main Street to the second signal. Make a
diagonal left turn onto Ocean Avenue and watch for the blue parking signs.
