Babá Ken & Afro-Groove ConneXion is the newest ensemble from Babá Ken Okulolo,
the vibrant leader of West African Highlife Band and Kotoja. Okulolo, who
came to America as the bass player in King Sunny Ade’s African Beats, created
the hard-hitting, improvisational Afro-funk band with a jazz sensibility from
recent studio jams. The “X” in the group’s name symbolizes the crossroads
where the world’s cultures meet through music. Along with Okulolo, Afro-Groove
ConneXion features Nigeria’s Soji Odukogbe, who was for five years the lead
guitarist for the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, along with Rasaki Aladokun, Gabe
Turow, and Chris Cox. www.africanmusicsource.com

The KTO Project, led by Kelly Takunda Orphan, is a dynamic, danceable world
music ensemble whose infectious beats come from a seasoned lineup of
musicians. They blend mbira (African thumb piano), funk, blues, and Middle
Eastern strains with original compositions. The KTO Project takes the listener
around
the world, connecting us with the love and dreams that unite us; the violence,
grief, and poverty that tear us apart; and the music that can heal us if we
open to its blessed rhythms. _www.kellytakundaorphan.com_

Hey jazz lovers,

Have you heard about this amazing new jazz group called Tribaljazz
fronted by The Doors drummer John Densmore? They are AMAZING live, I
just saw them play at Hear Music in Santa Monica, CA. I love their
new strudio CD as well. The group has musicians from all over the
world playing fantastic Latin jazz with really danceable African
Rhythms. I found a review of the show I went to here...

of samba, marchinhas (traditional carnaval sambas), pagode, and
frevo. Katia's energetic presence is beautifully complimented by the
explosive power of percussion, and outstanding keyboards, guitar and

explosion, her body in constant motion, her voice excited and
dynamic."

SAMBADÁ was Formed in 1997 by native Brazilian Papiba Godinho,
it is an explosive musical group out of Santa Cruz, California that is rapidly
inspiring audiences with its unique mixture of Brazilian samba and funky latin
dance grooves. From the blissful rhythms of samba to hip-hop riffs, from bossa
nova ballads to salsa, SambaDá's tunes are playful, vital, and
energetic: they make you dance and they make you sing, they are both intimate
and exuberant. Special guests are Mario Peter, Waghner Abuter from the
legendary Bloco afro Ile Ayé perfoming pulsating percussion rhythms of
Salvador, Bahia.

The OYA BRAZIL SAMBA SHOW DANCERS, led by director-choreographer
Daniela, complete the party as they offer its audiences a visual
feast with extravagant performances of samba, frevo, axé, and
capoeira, a traditional martial arts dance. Comprised of a diverse
team of talented dancers, this local ensemble of 15 radiates with
sheer energy and passion. This exuberant exotic show was created
authentically in Brazil. Brazilian mysticism, folklore, energy,
creativity and enthusiasm radiates from the performances. Using all
the best dancers and singers of Brazil, the performers themselves
represent the many cultural backgrounds of the people in Brazil,
bringing to life a resemblance of the colors of Brazil.

''...Brazilian Carnaval took over on Saturday night to celebrate with
a wildly extravagant music party...Hot, hot samba on a chilly L.A.

8. New 2 Hour DVD of Hand Drumming Rhythms for $10 + shipping
Posted by: "shannon" [EMAIL PROTECTED] n0jams
Date: Sat Jan 27, 2007 12:05 pm ((PST))

Hi Guys,

You can view a video clip of the 101 drum rhythms from my new DVD at
my website, or on MySpace. The DVD was professionally recorded,
edited, produced, and is over 2 hours long. Have a look at the video
sample. This DVD is an ideal resource for furthering your enjoyment
of hand drumming. The price is $10 + shipping for about a month.

Iv'e gotten a few notes about seeing me wearing a ring on the DVD.
It's a wedding band Tattoo! LoL
I kept losing my wedding band, so some years ago I had it tattooed on
my finger. Now I can't lose it anymore. That's what you call a Real
Commitment. Actually, my wife thought it was rather romantic since I
can't ever take it off.

Here is the direct link to see the video clip, and the order info is
there as well:

http://www.drumcircles.net/101drumcirclerhythmsDVD.html

Also, I'm a lefty, so it reads correct if you are right handed. Plus
it's just kind of to suggest the handwork, not necessarily the right
way, or even the only way to do it. Just to give people an idea by
how I play them and go from there. Then you can figure out your own
way to play them, alter them, etc.

As a drum circle facilitator, one of the most important things for me
is to have a large body of rhythms to choose from. Especially if you
host an ongoing drum circle. People want different rhythms to play
from week to week, or they get bored.

On this 2 hour long DVD of 101 rhythms for the hand drum,
each rhythm is numbered, and about a minute long. This is a massive
body of material, of rhythms from around the world. African, Afro-
Cuban, Native American, Middle Eastern, Blues, Funk, Soul, & Rock and
Roll. Great for the djembe, congas, doumbek, ashiko, bongos, or any
hand drum.

It may not be slow enough for beginners, but provides a huge body of
work to enjoy. Ideal for intermediate to professional level drummers,
but a beginner can grow into these. You can see the rhythms up close.
It gives you an idea of how the various notes and sounds are made. It
is not necessarily the only way to play these beats, just a starting
point to expand your repertoire.

Anyone out here who would like one without the case and artwork
(just the DVD disk) I'm offering it for $10 + shipping for about a
month, so anyone can afford it, in an effort to give back a little to
all those out here who have helped me in the past.

9. 8-Day Mbira Camps in California and Argentina
Posted by: "Erica Azim [EMAIL PROTECTED]" Erica Azim [EMAIL PROTECTED]
jplanet2k
Date: Sat Jan 27, 2007 12:06 pm ((PST))

Mbira Camp 2007 offers two summer sessions (more may be added) in Berkeley,
California, USA and one session in Argentina. The concept of Mbira Camp is
total immersion in traditional Shona mbira music of Zimbabwe, day and evening,
for 8 days.

2007 Mbira Camp dates will be:
Argentina Session: 20-27 May 2007
Session 1: 23-30 June 2007
Session 2: 21-28 July 2007
Session 3: possible August or September camp - dates to be determined

Mbira Camp is led by Erica Azim, who has played and loved Shona mbira music
since 1970. She has developed a teaching method designed specifically for
the non-Zimbabwean student who desires to experience traditional Shona mbira
music in its fullest depth. Zimbabwean co-teachers to be announced (no
Zimbabwean co-teacher for Argentina, however). Mbira Camp is sponsored by
the non-profit organization MBIRA, devoted to the preservation and support
of traditional Shona mbira music of Zimbabwe.

The typical Mbira Camp day includes mbira lessons in the morning, a break
after lunch, an optional related activity in the afternoon (hosho lesson,
mbira dance class, cultural presentation, etc), and the full group gathering
in the evening for mbira singing, ear training, and playing together.

Mbira Camp activities and instruction include:
-individual mbira lessons
-mbira lessons in pairs and groups
-mbira theory: how to improvise correctly within the mbira tradition
-learning to hear more of the interlocking lines in the mbira music you
play, singing lines the mbira is playing, and volume variations
-how to know when to play variations (and when not to)
-styles of kutsinhira playing
-playing together, the lock of kushaura and kutsinhira parts
-where the hosho fits with kushaura and kutsinhira
-learning to sing traditional mbira lyrics
-listening to recordings of Shona mbira players
-mbira-style hosho (gourd rattles which accompany mbira)
-learning about the traditional context of mbira in Shona culture and
religion
-mbira dance
-exploring mbira tunings and learning how to tune your mbira
Also, campers often play together in 2's and 3's informally, outside
scheduled session/lesson times.

Mbira lovers at every playing level are encouraged to attend, and previous
Mbira Camps have included beginning, intermediate, and advanced players.
Beginners may purchase an instrument from MBIRA in advance to use at Camp.

The summer Mbira Camp location is Erica Azim's big house and garden in
Berkeley, California. Lessons are held one day at the beach and one day in a
redwood forest, weather permitting. The Argentina Mbira Camp location will
be Pablo Paz's place in the river delta (however, those from outside
Argentina, please fly into Buenos Aires).

Cost of camp is $700 for eight days of mbira immersion, which covers all
living expenses (Mbira Camp is known for its great chefs!), instruction, and
activities. The summer Mbira Camp fee is reduced to $650, if paid IN FULL by
April 1st (postmark date). ***Argentina Mbira Camp has a lower price for
those who live in South America ONLY (for local payment details, contact
Pablo Paz at [EMAIL PROTECTED]), others pay the usual camp fee.

Advance enrollment for Mbira Camp is required. Enrollment is usually limited
to a maximum of 10 campers per session. A non-refundable $350 deposit with
the enrollment form will hold a space for you until April 1st; enrollment
later requires the full $700 fee. Enrollment is on a "first come" basis, so
send in your deposit as soon as possible. The balance of payment is due no
later than your first day of Camp. Please make checks or US$ money orders
payable to MBIRA, and send in with your Mbira Camp Enrollment Form. Payment
is non-refundable, unless another student takes your place (occasionally
there is a waiting list).

This information is also at http://www.mbira.org/mbiracamp.html, and the
camp enrollment form is at http://www.mbira.org/campenrollment.html.

If you have questions, please email [EMAIL PROTECTED] after March 10.

13. About the Unrest in Guinea

Hi all,

Been following the situation because I have many
friends in Conakry right now... Two good source of
info are:

- Friends of Guinea Blog. This blog is written by
the communications director for Peace Corps
Guinea, who have over 100 volunteers currently
in the country, so they keep pretty up to date.
 They are currently "on standfast":
  http://friendsofguinea.blogspot.com/

- BBC news online also has good coverage, right
now their latest report is here:
  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6298827.stm
or just go to their Africa page and watch for
 new headlines:
  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/default.stm

Hope this helps,
