This is a friendly reminder to attend the Central African Kongolese Dance &
Drum Conference 2007 beginning this THURSDAY!!!!!! The Kongolese are here
and they are still arriving!!. Again, this is an event you can't miss,
there is a beautiful array of artists that will be at this event so, come
one come all, you are guaranteed to have a funky, good time!!!!!! If you
had as much fun as you expressed last year, make sure you make it back this
year along with your friends. There will be vendors to support including
Conference T-shirts being sold ($20) so please keep this in mind. Also,
there will be a donation box set up for those who wish to support this event
and see it continue in the future, as it is currently self-funded. All
donations big and small are welcome. Lastly, please take the time to
complete a short survey on site once you have taken all the workshops you
wish to take so that we may receive feedback on this event. The surveys
will be on site and emailed after the event is over. Please cut and paste
the link below for the Laney College Campus location. For those that are
driving, you will be able to park in the campus student parking lot located
on E. 7th Street between Fallon Street and Fifth Avenue.

The conference schedule/cost is attached. Be sure to note that it will be
held Thursday, May 31st - Saturday, June 2nd at the Laney College Dance
Studio, 900 Fallon Street, Rm. D-100, Oakland, 94607, (campus map:

MABIBA BAEGNE: Was born in Brazzaville in the Congo and was initiated
into dance by her grandparents when she was eight years old. She
joined the National Ballet of the Congo at age 18 and toured the world
with them as a principal dancer for seven years. With the help of a
UNESCO grant, she went to Paris to study West African dance
techniques. She also continued her studies of African dance,
incorporating movements from Central and West Africa, Guinea, Mali,
and Senegal into her repertoire. As a dancer of the Guinea tradition,
Mabiba has worked under the tutelage of Djembe Fola Famadu Konate and
Mamady Keita. As a singer she has toured and recorded with Salif
Keita, master drummer Mamady Keita, and Samba Ngo. Mabiba is an
inspiring drummer. In addition to her dancing, Mabiba has studied
West African dunun drumming with master drummer Famoudou Konate in
Guinia and she was the first woman to teach this form in the U.S. She
is in high demand as a dance and drumming teacher throughout the
United States. She incorporates traditional singing and storytelling
in her workshops.

Saturday, June 2, from NOON to 9:30 P.M. the communities surrounding Mt.
Washington will Showcase their talents at a Celebration for the opening of
the Jack & Denny Smith Library and Community Center at Mount Washington
Elementary,
3981 San Rafael Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90065.

The fun starts immediately at noon with fire trucks and police cars, cotton
candy, burgers and sodas! Our Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa
and many of our other local dignitaries, council members and representatives
will be there to kick off the event;
the music will flow, a must see art exhibit will give 40% of its proceeds
back to the Community Center,
crafts, special readings and the comedy acts, the T'ai Chi Group of Mt.
Washington,
demonstrate traditional Yang Family 'Hand Form' and 'Sword Form.'

At 7 p.m., the fantastic performance of the 31 member Shaolin Monks Martial
Arts Troupe, direct from China,
will perform Kung Fu in the outdoor amphitheatre at the Mt. Washington
School.
This is the only show the Shaolin Monks will perform in Los Angeles on their
worldly tour.

8pm Arohi Ensemble will perform a dynamic concert of Raga Jazz & Creative
World Music
featuring world wind virtuoso Pedro Eustache, tabla master Abhijit Banerjee,

What's a Drum Circle? It is......
- An informal music making experience.

We got a grant for this year's Camp Fareta from ACTA -- it's a great group.
They're having a free meeting Monday, June 4, in Oakland for those who'd like

Living Cultures Grants Program Round 3 (2008)
Apprenticeship Program Round 8 (2008)
Traditional Arts Development Program Oakland Informational Meeting

ACTA ¦²s Living Cultures Grants Program provides funding for non-profit
organizations to support exemplary projects in the traditional arts. Grant
awards range up to $7,500. Application postmark deadline is August 1, 2007.
Projects may begin as early as December 17, 2007, and should end by December
16, 2008.

ACTA's Apprenticeship Program encourages the continuation of the state's
traditional arts and cultures by making $3,000 contracts with master artists to
train qualified apprentices. Application postmark deadline is August 1, 2007.
Apprenticeships may begin as early as December 17, 2007, and should end by
December 16, 2008.

ACTA ¦²s Traditional Arts Development Program makes contracts up to $1,500
to support consultancies, mentorships, and travel opportunities that foster a
new level of growth for individual folk & traditional artists and
organizations. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

ACTA ¦²s programs are made possible by the generous support and partnership
from the California Arts Council, the Fresno Arts Council, the James Irvine
Foundation, the Walter & Elise Haas Fund, the William & Flora Hewlett
Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the San Francisco
Foundation.
