2. Ashley Maher on DJ Nnamdi's Afrodicia- KPFK TODAY @ 3pm!!!
Posted by: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:51 pm ((PDT))

Dear All!

Afrodicia's DJ Nnamdi invited me to sing and chat on KPFK today at 3pm
(Pacific Time). 90.7FM. We're promoting my upcoming show opening for the
marvelous DOBET GNAHORE next Thursday night at Temple Bar. Nnamdi will be
DJ-ing
that evening, too!!

Temple Bar

Today, the brilliant Magatte Sow accompanies me on tama. Just voice and
tama on the radio ... how cool is that? They also have live streaming and you
can listen to Nnamdi's wonderful show for a week or so afterwards.

Radio Afrodicia

Lastly, check my impromptu sabar solo on Seneweb.com. (They named me "Sabar
Toubaab." LOL!) It's been viewed by almost 40,000 people now! Andre Manga
plays bass, Magatte Sow plays perfect tama, and we never dreamed it would have
got this much attention. If you haven't already, leave a comment! It's easy
and totally anonymous.

Sabar Toubaab solo on Seneweb

Peace and blessings,
Ashley

4. KCRW Presents SUSSAN DEYHIM @ Knitting Factory Hollywood Saturday, O
Posted by: "Cary Sullivan" [EMAIL PROTECTED] afrofunke
Date: Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:51 pm ((PDT))

INTERNATIONAL VOCALIST
SUSSAN DEYHIM
OFFERS "ROMANCE LANGUAGE" TO BRIDGE MIDDLE EAST/WEST

OCTOBER 6, 2007
AT
KNITTING FACTORY HOLLYWOOD

[September 16, Los Angeles] In times of war artists can be a light out of
the darkness. Iranian American vocalist Sussan Deyhim indeed represents a
bridge for peace between her native land and Americans, who will have an
opportunity to hear her new show, "Romance Language"-a collection of
international songs of love in Persian, Arabic, English, Italian, Portuguese
and her wordless incantation-on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at Knitting
Factory Hollywood, in a show presented by KCRW 89.9 FM and Levantine
Cultural Center.

Sussan Deyhim will present a compilation of her different musical and vocal
signatures, vintage love songs from around the world, first presented at The
London Jazz Festival. Part of the set will include music from "Logic of the
Birds," a collaboration with world renowned composer Richard Horowitz
("Sheltering Sky", "Any Given Sunday," "Three Seasons.") "Logic of the
Birds" is based on a 12th century play by Attar featuring a female spiritual
leader and has been produced at Lincoln Center, Art Angle in London and
Change in Europe. "Deyhim and Horowitz have created a unique and very
relevant body of work imbued with a sense of ritual and the unknown." The
Wire

Deyhim will also perform her new songs about the political issues she faces
as an Iranian artist living in the US for the last two decades. Deyhim has
previously collaborated with Ornette Coleman, Bobby McFerrin, Bill Laswell,
Rufus Wainwright, Talvin Singh, Jah Wobble and Will Calhoun, amongst many
others. Sussan has extensive film credits including doing the music and
sound design for 8 films by Shirin Neshat, collaborating with Oscar winner
Jan Kaczmarek on "Unfaithful," Peter Gabriel on "The Last Temptation of
Christ, Paul Hasliger on "Sleeper Cell," Richard Horowitz on "Any Given
Sunday," and with Alberto Iglesias on "The Kite Runner."

Deyhim has performed and recorded widely as a solo artist. Her one-woman
show "Vocodeliks," commissioned by the Whitney Museum of Art, led Billboard
Magazine to describe Deyhim as "an overpowering presence... [whose] wordless
incantations are amplified in harmonized layers and recycled into sampled
loops, beckoning you into this virtual desert ritual" while the New York
Times said that her "thrilling music...sounds in the ear long after you've
left the show." Deyhim's solo recordings include Madman of God: Divine Love
Songs of the Persian Sufi Masters, Shy Angels (with Bill Laswell) for the
visionary label Crammed Discs and Turbulent. Other recordings include
Majnoun (for Sony Classical) and Desert Equations (released on Crammed
Discs), both with the composer Richard Horowitz, a frequent collaborator.
With composer and director Heiner Goebbels, Deyhim recorded Shadows (for
ECM), based on writings of Edgar Allan Poe and Heiner Mueller, and composed
and performed music for Deepak Chopra's "A Gift of Love," with narration by
Martin Sheen, Madonna, Goldie Hawn, and Debra Winger. She was also a
featured soloist on Hal Wilner's tribute to Kurt Weill, "Lost in the Stars."

On October 6, she will be joined by legendary musicians Steve Ferrone on
drums and Dean Gant on keyboards as well as very special guests Ginnger
Shankar, Hussain Jiffy and Walter Rodriguez.

10. Jamie's Middle Eastern Rhythm Workshop Returns To Remo Thursday Sept
Posted by: "Jamie Papish" [EMAIL PROTECTED] african.beat
Date: Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:54 pm ((PDT))

Dear Drumming Enthusiasts,

After a very successful workshop at Remo last month, I was asked back to
give a regular monthly workshop which will take place the 4th Thursday of
every month. We will be working on new rhythms every month.

Date: Thursday September 27 7 – 9pm

Place: Remo Recreational Drum Center, 7308 Coldwater Canyon North Hollywood,
  CA 91605

Workshop Description:

Middle Eastern Rhythms with Jamie Papish

Jamie Papish, an experienced hand percussionist of Middle Eastern styles
will hold a 10 series monthly workshop where you will be introduced to the
most popular rhythms used in classical, folk and contemporary Middle Eastern
music. In each workshop Jamie will teach one or two rhythms. In this style
of music, a typical group or orchestra will have a few percussionists that
play different parts making up the rhythm section. Students will have the
opportunity to learn these rhythms and basic technique on any or all of the
4 main percussion instruments.

Dumbek(aka Darabuka, Derbekke, Tablah)-a vase shaped drum which sits on your
lap and is typically the lead voice in the percussion section.

Riqq-(aka Arabic Tambourine)- a small tightly tuned frame drum with 6 double
sets of cymbals adding high end color to the rhythm

Frame Drum (aka Duff, Tar, Bendir)- A large drum that either sits between
your legs or in both hands and holds down the bass or low end of the rhythm.

Zills (aka Finger Cymbals, Zagat) – small brass cymbals placed on the thumb
and middle finger of both hands used to add dynamics and enhance the groove.

For each of the rhythms, separate parts will be handed out for each
instrument with variations of the basic rhythm. Once rhythms are learned,
Jamie will teach combinations typically used to enhance the unique emotional
aspect of this music.

All levels welcome. You must be at least 10 years old. Bring your own
instruments or one will be provided for you.

Please pass this on to those you may think are interested.

Many Blessings,
Jamie Papish

Wednesday,November 14, 2007 at 8:00 p. m.
A native of the state of Bahia,CAETANO VELOSO is one of the most
important figures in contemporary Brazilian music. His poetry,
polemic, is considered a master piece. He writes his songs as a
painter would paint on his canvas. In fact, he makes every melody he
sings sound luminous and newly discovered. The Grammy Award winning
artist is perhaps Brazil’s greatest contemporary songwriter and is
among the most significant individuals to come out of the late 60’s
Tropicalia movement. The foundation of Veloso’s intensely eclectic
music is the rich Bahian musical heritage that was influenced by
Carribean, African and North American pop music and the cool
seductive bossa nova sound exemplified by Joao Gilberto.
Jon Pareles, from THE NEWYORK TIMES best describes Veloso as "one of
the greatest songwriters of the century: amaster melodist, a lyricist
who merges surreal imagery with a sense of history and a sense of
humor, a singer whose voice radiates tenderness and supple swing and
a musician who connects to traditional music, pop and jazz from all
over."
A founder of Brazil’s genre-crossing Tropicália movement in the ’60s,
he continues to blend new styles in the 21st century—as heard on his
rock-infused new CD. Caetano Veloso’s Cê was released by Nonesuch
Records on January 23, 2007. The record includes twelve original
songs by Veloso (vocals, nylon and steel guitars), who recorded them
in the spring and summer of 2006 with a rock band of younger
musicians: Pedro Sá (electric guitar), Ricardo Dias Gomes(bass,
Rhodes piano), and Marcelo Callado(drums); it was produced by Sá and
Moreno Veloso. Additionally, Pedro’s brother, Jonas Sá, sings guest
vocals on one track (Cê was released in Brazilin the fall of 2006.)

15. 10/11: "The Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio" @ Egyptian Theatre -- Film
Posted by: "subparstar" [EMAIL PROTECTED] subparstar
Date: Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:55 pm ((PDT))

Hello, all! The very limited U.S. tour of this group hits LA October
11th. Details below...

THE ORCHESTRA OF PIAZZA VITTORIO
** Film + LIVE Musical Performance **

Featuring musicians from:
Tunisia | Senegal | Cuba | Brazil | Ecuador | Italy | Hungary
...and beyond...

THE ORCHESTRA OF PIAZZA VITTORIO is a 5-year film diary that depicts
the herculean effort to save Rome's illustrious Apollo Cinema
theater, situated in the immigrant-dominated "Piazza Vittorio"
neighborhood, from being converted into a Bingo Hall. The strategy:
Create a magnificent, ground-breaking resident orchestra of 16
musicians from 11 countries and 4 continents! As anti-immigrant
activists take to the streets, decrying the "invasion" of foreigners
in the Italian capital, neighborhood musician Mario Tronco and
his "Apollo 11" partners struggle to pull together a functioning
orchestra in time for their first public performance: Is it true
there's an Indian tabla player living in Corsica? Who knows a
Tunisian oud player? Where does that Cuban trumpet player hang out?
Can the Senegalese vocalist be persuaded to join? The unlikely
success of this wildly ambitious effort is a modern fairy tale. 250
European concerts and 2 CD recordings later, the Orchestra of Piazza
Vittorio is still bringing its unique style of music and message of
unity to audiences around the world.

The Orchestra will perform after the screening. Film director
Agostino Ferrente will appear in person.

The touring orchestra includes: Houcine Ataa (Tunisa, vocals);
Evandro Cesar Dos Reis (Brazil, vocals, classical guitar,
cavaquinho); Omar Lopez Valle (Cuba, trumpet, flugelhorn); Awalys
Ernesto "El Kiri" Lopez Maturell (Cuba, drums, congas, background
vocals); Eszter Nagypal, (Hungary, cello); Carlos Manuel Duque Paz
(Ecuador, vocals, Andean flute); Giuseppe Pecorelli (Italy, double
bass, electric bass); El Hadji "Pap" Yeri Samb (Senegal, vocals,
djembe, dumdum, sabar); Dialy Mady Sissoko (Senegal, vocals, kora),
Mohamed Ziad Trabelsi (Tunisa, vocals, oud); Mario Tronco (Italy,
artistic director, Fender Rhodes).
