A NEW WOMEX OFFSPRING: DISMARC - DISCOVERING MUSIC ARCHIVES
Meet DISMARC at WOMEX 07:
- DISMARC Conference session on Thursday 25 October, 17:00 - 17:45,
Marismas Room
- DISMARC contact point: virtualWOMEX Counter in the FIBES Cúpula
What happens to the radio broadcast that you or your artist just made?
It gets archived, effectively dumped on top of the European audio
mountain. Or perhaps "audio iceberg" is a better analogy, as most
archived European audio is in reality hidden from public view.
Archives are home to a treasure trove of audio. The contents are not
only music - videos, books, documents, manuscripts and musical
instruments are all part of Europe's cultural heritage.
DISMARC, a two-year EU-funded project which began in September 2006,
will deliver a unique, one-stop view into Europe's audio archives.
Archives contribute their catalogue data which is then searchable via
the DISMARC portal.
For archives: would you like your material to be more widely available
to your audience? We invite interested archives and content owners to
participate for free in the DISMARC project - just visit the DISMARC
website at www.dismarc.org and follow the "Participation" link.
DISMARC will also deliver music to TEL (The European Library):
see www.theeuropeanlibrary.org for more. WOMEX is one of the DISMARC
partners, and project representatives will be attending WOMEX 07 in
Sevilla.
Who benefits from DISMARC?
· archives
· broadcasters
· content aggregators
· download platforms
· educational publishers
· media
· performing artists
· record labels
· researchers
· students
· and the general public.

__________
WRISTBANDS
For the first time WOMEX will give out wristbands as well as badges.
Both must be worn at all times during WOMEX 07 and are not
transferable. For this reason, delegates may be asked to provide proof
of identity. WOMEX is unable to replace badges and/or wristbands that
have been lost. Replacements are charged a full price registration.
____________
unFAIR GUIDE
If you have been contacted by Construct Data after 13 February 2007
and have signed their Fair Guide update offer because you thought it
was sent by WOMEX, please let us know (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]). We
will then notify the Austrian "Schutzverband gegen unlauteren
Wettbewerb" (association against unfair competition) hoping that we
can contribute with it to stop Construct Data from sending out
misleading mailings.
Best regards from your WOMEX team in Berlin

Youssouf Koumbassa is a dancer, musician and teacher. He is a former
artist of Ballet Djoliba, the National Ballet of Guinea. Born and
raised in Guinea, West Africa. In Guinea he studied under Sekouba
Camara, Artistic director of Ballet National Djoliba and also with
Kemoko Sano, the acclaimed Artistic Director of Les Ballets
Africains. Incredible teacher!!!
Mariama was born in a small village in Guinea. She started dancing
when she was a young girl, in her father's company, Soleil
D'Afrique. She began dancing with Les Ballets Africains, the
national company, when she was a teenager. She was a principal
dancer in both companies, acknowledged for her technique and spark.
Karamba's extensive performing career includes tours, recording and
performance with Famoro Kuyatey's "Kiké", Fils Rais, Fatala and the
Ballet Bagata. He is a brilliant musician of the djembe, djun djun,
ballaphon and krin. Many of us who have attended West African drum
and dance camps around the U.S. have experienced Karamba's fiery
playing and infectious joy.

*Mickey Hart's * lifelong passion for global sounds brought numerous
eclectic guests to the Dead's performance stages.
His 1991 *Planet Drum* was the natural outgrowth of this adventure,
convening the world's finest percussion talent in a dazzling collaboration -
including Indian tabla virtuoso *Zakir Hussain*, an international phenomenon
in his own right. It was recorded in Hart's Sonoma County home and studio,
with the Dead's legendary crew turning virtually every room in the house
into work zones for the musicians.

The album won the first-ever Grammy for Best World Music Album, spent an
unprecedented six months at #1 on the Billboard chart, and sells as a
perennial favorite to this day.
Fifteen years have passed, and Hart and Hussain's musical partnership
continues to flourish. Their immensely well-received 2006 Planet Drum
reunion tour germinated the idea for the *Global Drum Project* -- a fresh
collaboration of tranced-out grooves, elegant electronic programming and
hypnotic-tuned percussion. Produced by Hart and Hussain, it again
enlists *Planet
Drum's* great partnership of *Sikiru Adepoju* (Nigerian talking drum)
and *Giovanni
Hidalgo* (congas) -- as well as Zakir's brother *Taufiq Qureshi* on
percussion & vocals, *Niladari Kumar *on sitar, *Dilshad Khan *on sarangi,
and sampled vocals by the late, great *Olatunji*.
*Global Drum Project* is now in stores, and the group is touring nationwide
this fall.
Additionally, Shout! Factory has digitally issued the classic Hart & Hussain
catalog via iTunes, with physical releases planned for 2008:
- *Diga Rhythm Band *- among the first "world music" recordings, a
crystalline, remixed celebration of drumming and percussion featuring Hart,
Hussain, nine other rhythmatists, and appearances by Jerry Garcia on two
tracks.
- *At The Edge *- companion to Hart's acclaimed book debut, "Drumming at the
Edge of Magic" (Harper San Francisco 1990), this exploration of the music of
primeval man unfolds a serene soundscape of tuned percussion, ambient
natural sounds, and guitar treatments by Jerry Garcia.
-* Mystery Box * - an effervescent, pop-inflected album of breezy songs with
layered vocals by England's Mint Juleps with a vocal debut by Mickey Hart.
- *Supralingua *- again pushing the "tribal space" boundaries of percussion
and sound, with some of the stellar guest personnel of the
Grammy-winning *Planet
Drum*.
