1. New at "Likembe": Dakar Divas, Polihet!
Posted by: "beadlejp" [EMAIL PROTECTED] beadlejp
Date: Fri Feb 15, 2008 5:31 pm ((PST))
Dear Friends:
I've recently made several new postings on my audioblog "Likembe,"
featuring exciting sounds from Senegal and Ivory Coast:
>From Dakar Divas Pt. 3: Aby Ngana Diop
<http://likembe.blogspot.com/2008/02/dakar-divas-pt-3-aby-ngana-diop.htm\
l> :
". . . Liital, by Aby Ngana Diop, is one of those recordings that sneaks
up behind you, knocks you upside the head with a two-by-four, and leaves
you dazed and bleeding on the sidewalk, wondering what hit you. I know
absolutely nothing about this Senegalese chanteuse, nor does anyone
else, but that hasn't stopped those who have heard this early '90s
cassette (apparently her only recording) from going absolutely bonkers.
. ."
>From Dakar Divas Pt. 4: Ndeye Mbaye
<http://likembe.blogspot.com/2008/02/dakar-divas-pt-4-ndeye-mbaye.html>
:
". . . Like Kiné Lam
<http://likembe.blogspot.com/2007/08/dakar-divas-pt-1-kin-lam.html> and
Daro Mbaye
<http://likembe.blogspot.com/2007/09/dakar-divas-pt-2-daro-mbaye.html> ,
Ndeye Mbaye is a veteran of the Ensemble Lyrique Traditionel of
Senegal's esteemed Daniel Sorano National Theatre, which she directed
from 1987 to 1990. Previously she was a member of the National Ballet of
Senegal for seven years starting in 1965. Mbaye's cassette release
Kóllëré (SAPROM, early '90s), a Youssou N'Dour production (he
appears on one track), amply displays her expansive voice as well as
top-flight work by an ensemble that includes Vieux M. Faye on lead
guitar and Mbaye Dieye Faye on percussion. . ."
>From Polihet! <http://likembe.blogspot.com/2008/01/polihet.html> :
". . .Born in the suburbs of Abidjan around 1990, Polihet is just one of
a dizzying array of styles that have made that city a musical hotbed to
rival Kinshasa, Dakar and Lagos. Ziglibithy, Zouglou, Zoblazo. . . all
have made their mark, only to be abandoned as fickle Ivoiriens moved on
to the next craze. All of these styles are characterized by
criss-crossing polyrythms and frantic, shouted vocals. About Polihet,
Nick Deen over at Natari <http://www.natari.com/> said it best: '. . .
I'd love to actually see the dancing that goes with this music in action
as I reckon you'd need three pairs of legs just to keep one foot on the
ground!'. . ."
Please feel free to drop in!
John B.

Hello Sisters and Brothers of the African Diaspora:
My name is Adrienne and for the past 8 months I have been on scholarship
at the Jimmie Defore Dance Center in Costa Mesa, CA. Myself and the
other scholarship students dance 6 days a week taking about 22 classes
per week for a whopping 34 hours of dance. That doesn't even include our
rehearsals! We are working very hard. This weekend we will have our
concluding performance where you will see the fruits of our labor.
Dance show will be held at the Robert B. Moore Theater at Orange Coast
College. Friday February 15th at 8pm and Saturday February 16th at 8pm.
($20 presale $25 at the door)
There will be works ranging from Jazz, Tap, Modern, Lyrical, Hip-Hop all
from amazing choreographers. It will be an excellent show. If you love
dance you will love this show.
more info at: www.deforedance.com <http://www.deforedance.com>
Hope to see you there!
Sincerely,

6. Jamati.com: Celebrates Love Across Continents In February
Posted by: "streetforce1" [EMAIL PROTECTED] streetforce1
Date: Fri Feb 15, 2008 5:33 pm ((PST))
Piscataway, MD - With the release of the February Issue, "Africa's
Premiere Entertainment Portal" will take the world into an African
Love Zone.
Based on data from American Greetings, Valentine's Day (which occurs
on February 14th) represents approximately 1 billion cards, making it
the second most popular day for cards after Christmas. Therefore with
such an important global history representing fertility, love, romance
or amour it the tradition had to be celebrated. Said to date as far
back as the Middle Ages and or 270 AD, Valentine's Day has deep roots
in Roman, French, English and Christian traditions which as a
Pan-African Publication, is important to recognize.
"Our research showed that, in addition to the United States,
Valentine's Day is celebrated in Mexico, the United Kingdom, France,
and Australia. With our readers represented in these five regions and
beyond, it was only appropriate that this issue, be reflective of the
many faces of African love" said Mwabi Kaira-Murdock, Editor-in-Chief
at Jamati.com.
February is once again seasoned with exclusive interviews, profiles,
news and firsts on Jamati.com. The ever popular lists feature will
unveil the "Top 10 African Love Songs," and "Loving You Is So Easy To
Do Hot Couples" which will showcase African celebrities and their
mates. In the Style section, Chris Aire aka The King of Bling, famous
for draping Oprah, Will Smith, Tyson Beckford, Eva Longoria and more,
in his diamond creations, drops in for a chat. Ms. Angelique Shofar,
dubbed the "Sexual Griot" opens up about spiritual sexuality, African
traditions and how to get your groove on. NFL Star and Minnesota
Viking Vishante Shiancoe, talks about his love for the game and
reveals a little bit about what he loves in a woman. Law & Order
Actor Bambadjan Bamba gives some insights into his passion for his
art and other tidbits, and Ruby Lingerie makes a splash in the spirit
of the Love. Chock full of entertainment news, photos and such from
across the Diaspora. Finally, this month Jamati.com readers will get
lots of love with the announcement of the four (4) AFROKICKS Sneaker
Winners, selected from hundreds of entries.
With the February launch, daily doses of entertainment information,
Jamati Videos, Crimson Carpet shots, expansion into Europe with
Muziki Magazine, exclusive co-promotional partnerships, content
uniquely targeted to a Pan-African Audience, and more to come,
Jamati.com is the definitive authority as it continues to usher in a
New African Entertainment Renaissance.

10. HANAYUI, Sister company of KODO, Aratani/Japan America Theatre, LA,

HANAYUI, Sister company of KODO at the Aratani/Japan America Theatre
on March 8, 2008
The Japanese performing arts group Hanayui make their Southern
California debut at the Aratani / Japan America Theatre this coming
March 8th.
Featuring Yoko Fujimoto and Chieko Kojima of KODO and Okinawan dance
expert Mitsue Kinjo, Hanayui explores the rich folk tradition of
traveling entertainers who traversed the Japanese countryside with
song and dance.
Hanayui grew as an offshoot of Kodo in 1991 when original members
Fujimoto and Kojima envisioned a less taiko-centric performance, and a
more intimate atmosphere of folk dance and song with the taiko drum as
accompaniment. Together with Okinawan dance expert Kinjo, this 3 woman
trio has captivated audiences from local community centers to concert
halls around the world with their enlivening interpretation of folk
dances, vibrant percussive sounds and hauntingly beautiful songs.
For their performance at the Aratani / Japan America Theatre Hanayui
will be joined on stage by Kaoru Watanabe, former KODO member and
artistic director, performing on the shinobue bamboo flute.
Come and experience the pure sounds and color of rural Japan at their finest.

Part 2: History of Acoustic Guitar..by Noel Lorica(Acoustic Guitarist)

2. 18th Century-Late into the century the spanish school of
guitar making flourished, together with the addition of the sixth
string
3.19th Century-due to improve travel and commerce the guitar
became a widely known instrument.
4.In spain Antonio de Torres developed the spanish guitar in

The electric guitar was patented by George Beauchamp in 1936.
Beauchamp co-founded Rickenbacher which used the horseshoe-magnet
pickup. However, it was Danelectro that first produced electric
guitars for the wider public.
Part 3
Types of guitar By Noel Lorica
Guitars can be divided into two broad categories, acoustic and
electric:
Acoustic guitars
An acoustic guitar is one not dependent on an external device to be
heard. The acoustic guitar is quieter than other instruments commonly
found in bands and orchestras so when playing within such groups it
is often externally amplified. Many acoustic guitars available today
feature a variety of pickups which enable the player to amplify and
modify the raw guitar sound.
There are several notable subcategories within the acoustic guitar
group: classical and flamenco guitars; steel string guitars, which
include the flat top or "folk" guitar; twelve string guitars and the
arch top guitar. The acoustic guitar group also includes unamplified
guitars designed to play in different registers such as the acoustic
bass guitar which has a similar tuning to that of the electric bass
guitar.
Renaissance and Baroque guitars
These are the gracile ancestors of the modern classical guitar. They
are substantially smaller and more delicate than the classical
guitar, and generate a much quieter sound. The strings are paired in
courses as in a modern 12 string guitar, but they only have four or
five courses of strings rather than six. They were more often used as
rhythm instruments in ensembles than as solo instruments, and can
often be seen in that role in early music performances. (Gaspar Sanz'
Instrucción de Música sobre la Guitarra Española of 1674 constitutes
the majority of the surviving solo corpus for the era.) Renaissance
and Baroque guitars are easily distinguished because the Renaissance
guitar is very plain and the Baroque guitar is very ornate, with
inlays all over the neck and body, and a paper-cutout
inverted "wedding cake" inside the hole.
Classical guitars
These are typically strung with nylon strings, played in a seated
position and are used to play a diversity of musical styles including
classical music. The classical guitar is designed to allow for the
execution of solo polyphonic arrangements of music in much the same
manner as the pianoforte can. This is the major point of difference
in design intent between the classical instrument and other designs
of guitar. Flamenco guitars are very similar in construction, but are
associated with a more percussive tone. In Mexico, the popular
mariachi band includes a range of guitars, from the tiny requinto to
the guitarron, a guitar larger than a cello, which is tuned in the
bass register. In Colombia, the traditional quartet includes a range
of instruments too, from the small bandola (sometimes known as the
Deleuze-Guattari, for use when traveling or in confined rooms or
spaces), to the slightly larger tiple, to the full sized classical
guitar. The requinto also appears in other Latin-American countries
as a complementary member of the guitar family, with its smaller size
and scale, permitting more projection for the playing of single-lined
melodies. Modern dimensions of the classical instrument were
established by Antonio Torres Jurado (1817-1892). Classical guitars
are sometimes referred to as classic guitars.
Portuguese guitar
The Portuguese guitar is a 12 string guitar used in Portugal for the
traditional Fado song. Its true origins are somewhat uncertain but
there is a general agreement that it goes back to the medieval
period. It is often mistakenly thought to be based on the so-
called "English guitar" - a common error as there is no such thing.
For some time the best instruments of this and other types were made
in England, hence the confusion. "English guitar" refers to a quality
standard, not really an instrument type. This particular instrument
is most likely a merge of medieval "cistre" or "citar" and the Arabic
lute.
Flat-top (steel-string) guitars
Similar to the classical guitar, however, within the varied sizes of
the steel-stringed guitar the body size is usually significantly
larger than a classical guitar and it has a narrower, reinforced neck
and stronger structural design. This allows the instrument to
withstand the additional tension of steel strings. The steel strings
produce a brighter tone, and according to many players, a louder
sound. The acoustic guitar is used in many kinds of music including
folk, country, bluegrass, pop, jazz and blues.
Archtop guitars
These are steel string instruments which feature a violin-inspired f-
hole design in which the top (and often the back) of the instrument
are carved in a curved rather than a flat shape. Lloyd Loar of the
Gibson Guitar Corporation invented this variation of guitar after
designing a style of mandolin of the same type. The typical Archtop
is a deep, hollow body guitar whose form is much like that of a
mandolin or violin family instrument and may be acoustic or electric.
Some solid body electric guitars are also considered archtop guitars
although usually 'Archtop guitar' refers to the hollow body form.
Archtop guitars were immediately adopted upon their release by both
jazz and country musicians and have remained particularly popular in
jazz music, usually with flatwound strings. The electric semi-hollow
body archtop guitar has a distinct sound among electric guitars and
is consequently appropriate for many styles of pop music. Many
electric archtop guitars intended for use in rock and roll have a
Tremolo Arm.
Part3: Guitar Description
All about the Acoustic guitar
The bodies of cheap Acoustic guitars are typically made from
laminated tonewood. More expensive Acoustics are made from higher
cuts of solid spruce top wood On an Acoustic guitar, the material
which the body is made from really matters, so those looking for a
rich sound will want to choose a guitar with a body made from nicer
wood such as spruce top wood.
The neck of the Acoustic guitar is usually made from maple, mahogany,
or rosewood. However, some guitar necks are comprised of different
woods. Yet again, the quality of wood does matter. Generally
speaking, Acoustic guitars with necks made of a high quality maple or
mahogany and bodies made with solid spruce top are quality guitars
with great tone. These guitars usually cost $250 on up.
The vibration of the strings is amplified by the soundhole of the
guitar. This is where all sound that you hear comes from.
If you look inside the soundhole of the Acoustic guitar, you'll see
the construction of the body. There are braces and linings, all
essential to keeping the guitar intact and playable. X-bracing, a
strong, durable bracing, is typically used on Acoustic guitars
because it is heavy and strong enough to withstand the pressure of
steel strings.
On the body of the guitar, you'll find the bridge. This is where one
end of the strings goes. The strings are inserted into the little
holes and the bridge pegs hold them there.
On the neck of the Acoustic guitar is the fretboard. Most fretboards
on the Acoustic guitar are made of rosewood or ebony. More expensive
Acoustic guitars have fretboards made of higher quality woods.
The headstock of the Acoustic guitar features six tuning pegs (three
on each side of the headstock) and six tuners (three on each side of
the headstock). Good Acoustic guitars will have die-cast Grover
tuners which usually stay in tune longer than other brands of tuners.
Like their Electric counterparts, Acoustic guitars are tuned in the
standard E A D G B E tuning. Most Acoustic guitars have six strings,
while some have twelve. If you are curious as to the difference
between the two, check out our article on "Twelve string vs. Six
string".
The Acoustic guitar still remains a very popular instrument. It is
used in virtually every style of musicrock, pop, country, blues, you
name it. Acoustic guitars are wonderful instruments for both
beginners and professionals.
