3. Ghana's Rocky Dawuni Summer 2008 US Dates!!
Posted by: "Cary Sullivan" [EMAIL PROTECTED] afrofunke

ROCKY DAWUNI SUMMER 2008 US DATES

Ghana's international music sensation, Rocky Dawuni returns to the United
States this summer for string of high profile live concerts. Rocky is one of
Africa's most popular musicians whose live performances have often been
called "legendary" and he is scheduled to appear at The Independent in San
Francisco on July 26th for the Afro Funke Festival, renowned Reggae On the
Rocks in Colorado on August 16th, the Twilight Dance Series at Santa Monica
Pier in Los Angeles on August 7th, Malibu Inn in Malibu on August 24th.
Full itinerary below, please don't miss the opportunity to catch this
amazing live performer!!

Rocky Dawuni's current CD Book of Changes, blazes new paths as a progressive
fusion of Reggae, Afro Beat, traditional African sounds, and Hip Hop
neo-griotism which has been dubbed "infectious" and "a classic" by
tastemakers. In addition, his tunes "Wake the Town" and "The One" are
featured on video giant EA's FIFA 2008 and Simm's video games which have
been released world-wide on millions of consoles. Dawuni was also recently
signed to a co-publishing and administration deal by Lionsgate Music.

2008 has been an international whirlwind for the Ghanaian star, with Rocky
bringing Helsinki, Finland to a stand still with his headlining concert at
the Tavastia. The UNICEF benefit also featured a who's who of Finnish stars
that came out to support the cause and joined Rocky on stage for riotous
encore. The visit received wide media coverage and brought crucial attention
to his work with UNICEF on children's causes around the world. He also
appeared in concert with Israeli Star Mosh Ben Ari at the Wilshire Theatre
in June in Los Angeles having toured with him in Israel last year to rave
reviews and, earlier this year, hit the city of Tamale in Ghana's Northern
Region - rolling into town for Rocky Dawuni's Independence Splash 2008.
The event was held at the new 20,000-capacity Tamale Sports Stadium and
Dawuni and his 10-piece band's dazzling performance ensured the roots reggae
musician a triumphant return to his ancestral home land of Northern Ghana.
The 8th annual event (and the first ever live concert at his venue) was
organized by Dawuni's Africa Live! NGO and assisted by the Tamale
Metropolitan Assembly, with support from UNICEF and the European Union.

Dawuni has made several extensive trips throughout the Northern Region in
conjunction with UNICEF & the Carter Center, helping shed light on the acute
water and sanitation problems and hoping to spur practical and sustainable
solutions reflective of his ongoing quest to use music as a tool for social
development. Rocky has also served as a spokesperson and personality for
Product (RED) led by U2's front man Bono and Bobby Shriver supporting The
Global Fund's initiatives on HIV/ AIDs in Africa.

FIRST WOMEX SHOWCASE ANNOUNCEMENT * DISMARC CD PROJECT * REGIONAL FUND
WEST AFRICA

Dear WOMEXicanos,

here you find the first and long-awaited information on WOMEX 08
Showcases, a DISMARC treasure trove and a call for project proposals
by the Regional Fund for the Promotion of Cooperation and Cultural
Exchange in West Africa.

FIRST WOMEX SHOWCASE ANNOUNCEMENT

We are most happy to announce the first WOMEX Showcases who have
already confirmed. We'd like to thank the seven Samurai for the hard
and dedicated work they have put into this year's selection.
"I think we have reached very balanced high-profile results. I am
totally convinced that it is a great selection for all WOMEX
visitors", says Samurai Tobias Maier.

For the first time we have used an online tool for the showcase
proposal submissions - http://www.sonicbids.com - which gave the WOMEX
Jury enough time to go through all artists' proposals and do a
personal list of favourites before the actual jury meeting.
"In general Sonicbids gave easy access to all the necessary
information. Compared to previous years it seems like a huge step
forward. I think the quality of the jury debate and the final
decisions wouldn't have been possible without the use of Sonicbids or
an alternative but similar system. Now we at least came somewhat
prepared and therefore had time left for in-depth discussion", said
Samurai Maarten Rovers, after the jury marathon in Berlin.

Here are the first showcases who have confirmed:

- A Filetta (France)
- Alex Cuba (Cuba/Canada)
- Bako Dagnon (Mali)
- Bedouin Jerry Can Band (Egypt)
- Camané (Portugal)
- Fatima Spar & The Freedom Fries
(Turkey/Bulgaria/Ukraine/Serbia/Austria)
- Jouhiorkesteri (Finland)
- LA-33 (Colombia)
- Liu Fang (China/Canada)
- Mike Marshall & Darol Anger with Väsen (USA/Sweden)
- Mo DJ (Mali)
- Salamat Sadikova (Kyrgyzstan)
- Speed Caravan (Algeria/Morocco/France)
- Tomás de Perrate (Spain)
- Tumi and the Volume (South Africa)
- Zabit Nabizade Trio (Azerbaijan)

Update 15 July 2008, programme subject to change

We will be announcing more artists next week...

8. Camaraya - the time has come - 9/25-28!
Posted by: "ginenyira" [EMAIL PROTECTED] ginenyira
Date: Sat Jul 26, 2008 1:29 pm ((PDT))

All,
The time is now to pre-register for the Camaraya Drum & Dance
Practicum! If you have not drummed or danced in years, this would be
the perfect opportunity to jump back inwith both feet! Four days of
intensive rehearsals, great people, amazing artists and one
incredible performance starring all of us and... YOU at the end!

And if you've been drumming and dancing all along, come join us to
what has been called the closest you can get to a Guinea learning
experience in America!

Begin Thursday afternoon at beautiful Camp Coleman, 1.5 hrs north of
Atlanta, GA, we will start with a dance class and all drummers will
drum, then an opening meeting, dinner and the choreography and
arrangements begin. We will rehearse through Saturday evening, at
which point we will enjoy a sumptuous African barbecue featuring
fresh goat and lots of veggies. We will have at least one additional
African dinner on Thurs or Friday night.

Wake up Sunday morning and we all head to Atlanta for dress rehearsal
and a public performance of what we have rehearsed in downtown
Atlanta! You will surprise yourself with what you can accomplish in
such a short time!!! And everything you've learned is yours to take
home and perform with your own group - plus the t-shirt. And the
graphic for this year's t-shirt is slick, maybe worth the cost of
camp and a vacation in itself!!

So, gas prices are high, all the more incentive to carpool your way
to Atlanta, if you can find 4 friends to join you we can talk about a
discount! This was a fantastic experience last year, and it is going
to be logaRHYTHMically better this year! Same great location, same
wonderful instructors, better food and a performance in Atlanta!

For more info and to register, go to
http://www.africanperformingarts.org/gpage2.html. You can print out
the registration form and mail it in with a check, or you can pay via
paypal and fill out the online form, or fill out the online form and
mail a check, whatever works. The form was not working up until
today, so if you tried it previously, please try again!

EVERYONE IS WELCOME - no matter your age, gender, race, skill level,
we will make it beautiful!

If you are interested in coming, please send in a registration form
with a $50 deposit at your earliest convenience, and you can pay $115
by 9/1 and the remaining by the time you come to camp.
