Subject: The African Beat Homesick Africans watch African TV online

Whenever I'm out of Africa for a while I become homesick. I miss the
TV programs, the Music, the sites and sounds and the people.
I use the Internet to solve some of these problems, So I'm sharing my
tips with you Africans that are also in diaspora.
I use the net to chat and social network with friends at home, I even
searched and came across a service that is targeted to people like me.
It is an African online TV and movies site. It's a service that you
can use to keep up with news, music and other entertainment even if
you are out of the continent. http://africamars. com

4. Afia Walking Tree's Spirit Drumz - 5 Drumming Tips
Posted by: "Afia Walking Tree" [EMAIL PROTECTED] african.beat

Spirit Drumz eNewz
Drummin' Our Souls into the Change, Spirit & Liberation we seek!

August 2008

Dear Friend,

This has been a wonderful Summer of change and growth for me. I just
moved to Sausalito, CA where I have an incredible studio by the ocean.
I am very excited about now offering both private and small group
drumming lessons there. If you live in the Bay Area and would like to
take advantage of this opportunity, please email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am also thrilled to be conducting workshops in California, Toronto
and British Columbia this fall. Please see Up Coming Events for
details.

With Gratitude
Afia Walking Tree

 Affirmation of the Month
"Purify my Forgiving Heart
O Sacred Fires of Love
Wash My Spirit Clean
Renew within me Right and Divine Spirit"
I use this affirmation to remove old patterns in the form of
thoughts, behaviors and energies from my life on a daily basis. It
brings me into a present state of love for myself in a very deep and
caring way. The intention here for me is always to purify myself when
I have a difficult time facing parts of myself that are wounded. This
affirmation takes me out to the self-blame and self-judgment into the
act of clearing, cleansing, and having compassion with others and
myself.

I have found that this affirmation keeps me present with what is
really true and opens my heart into a place of forgiveness when I am
thinking negatively about my life, or others.

The energy that I experience in chanting this affirmation is usually a
loving connection to myself, compassion for all of humanity and
gratitude for the universe in her beauty.

Guinea Drum & Dance Update
December 22, 2008 to January 9, 2009 on Tropical Island Roume, in West Africa

Thirty Participants in Only Four Months!!!

I am so thrilled and grateful to announce that we have reached our
goal of securing 30 participants from the US, Canada and Europe for
the Guinea Drum & Dance Intensive. We now have a waiting list for the
trip and are checking to see if the camp can accommodate more people.
If you would like to have your name added to our wait list or sign up
for the next drumming journey to either Africa or Jamaica please
either email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call (541) 273-0124.

Five Hand Drumming Tips

Want to find more ways of drumming with energy and freedom? The
following are some suggestions on how to shift "blocked energy,
technique and, patterns" when drumming:

1. Playing while sitting forward in your chair with your back straight
and abdomen (lower dantien) in, allows for more flexibility and
readiness for playing. This also helps with consistent breathing.
2. Laying the drum flat on the floor hinders the sounds from pouring
out of your drum. To assist you in holding your drum in place, use a
belt or piece of strong fabric to tie on the drum and then tuck fabric
or belt under your buttocks to hold it in place. You will find that it
is easier to maneuver the drum and keep it from slipping.
3. Hitting the drum flat handed hinders the resonance that comes out
of the top. When making contact with the drum, visualize it as a hot
plate. If you hit down on it and you keep your hand there, you would
get burned. Practice hitting the skin with the focus on instantly
moving your hand upwards. The intent of hitting is not a down motion
but an upward motion, which allows the voice of the drum to come out
and sing for you.
4. Slapping the drum is different on every drum. Djembe slaps are
flat handed and open fingers in the same position where you played the
tone. Conga slaps are with a cupped hand that finishes on the skin.
Over time, this becomes practiced and less effort is required to make
sweet sounding tones and slaps.
5. It is best to use Shea butter 15 - 30 mins before drumming or
directly after drumming in order to receive its benefits of guarding
against blisters and dryness when playing. I have found that using
Shea while drumming dampens the sound of the skin and all the oil from
your hands goes right into it.
