The GLOBAL DRUM PROJECT TourThe GLOBAL DRUM PROJECT Tour brings Mickey Hart,
Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo together again in a reunion
sparked by the 15th anniversary of the ground-breaking album Planet Drum.
Released in 1991 on the Rykodisc label it went on to earn the first-ever Grammy
Award in the World Music category. The tour is the groups first in almost a
decade. It also marks the resumption of an artistic relationship between
Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain that goes back to the late 1960s. For Hart,
this reunion is an opportunity to take Planet Drum into new places. “This is a
deep drumming groove. We’re taking the archaic rhythm worlds into outer space.
Planet Drum explores rhythm and noise…it’s a sound yoga of processed acoustic
percussion headed straight for the trance zone that becomes a dance of ancient
and modern worlds. Deep drumming is a skeleton key into these realms.”

My guest on Wednesday October 8, 2008 8 AM Segment of Conversations
of Africa will be Willie Ratcliff, Publisher of The Bay View
Newspaper. We will discuss a laundry list of issues from the San
Francisco 8, the history and future of The Bay View to police
brutality at KPFA FM in Berkeley, and other critical issues like the
Obama victory at the first presidential debate, and if Black San
Francisco will survive the redevelopment of Hunters Point where most
San Francisco Blacks continue to live! Forward this announcement to
family and friends!

Willie Ratcliff Short biography:

The San Francisco Bay View newspaper is the best vehicle Willie
Ratcliff has found in a long life of activism to drive home the
message that the people truly do have the power to overcome
oppression and injustice. He began publishing the Bay View – now the
Bay Area's largest Black newspaper – in 1992. He distributes 20,000
papers weekly on Wednesdays and can't keep up with the demand. Hits
on the Bay View's website, www.sfbayview.com, have exceeded 2
million a month.

Born 75 years ago into a little self-governing Black nation known as
East Liberty in Deep East Texas founded by his ancestors who had won
their freedom and bought their land before the Civil War, he grew up
knowing that Black people can form beloved communities, living in
dignity, enjoying peace and even prosperity, determining their own
destiny. That knowledge fuels his conviction that all who suffer
discrimination and demonization can and must join together to defy
and

defeat it.

A contractor since 1967 who broke down barriers, sometimes single-
handedly, that locked his people out of the construction industry,
he served for seven years on the Alaska State Commission for Human
Rights, chairing it during the pipeline construction years when it
became an instrument for earthshaking change. Today, he is using his
construction and human rights experience to promote self-sufficiency
in the `hood by opening opportunities for Black businesses and
workers, including the chronically unemployed – by putting the
public to work – in public works construction projects.

Ratcliff uses the Bay View not only to enlighten and embolden his
own Black community here and throughout the Diaspora but to build
progressive coalitions. As a member of the board for several terms
at KPFA, the world's first public radio station, he promoted the
formation of progressive media collaborations and the training of
revolutionary young media makers who are unafraid to tell the truth
and point the way to a brighter future. In a time of increasing
tyranny and terror, he is proud and overjoyed to join with allies
whose vision and courage can cure an ailing world with truth and
love.

group that they have been since the Lamabada explosion of the 1980's.

SPECIAL GUEST:

Renni Flores native of Bahia, Brazil. Bahia is considered the soul
and heart beat of Brazil. Renni started singing at the age of 5, and
in the early 80s she became the first woman in Bahia to sing with the
group Bloco Afro Ilê Aiye in carnaval. She has the full rich sound
needed to sing alone with drums of northeast Brazil. From there she
performed at various festivals and directed her own folkloric dance
company Bahia Magia, one of Brazil’s leading groups. Working with the
