FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SOUNDS OF L.A. GREETS 2009 WITH A DYNAMIC LINEUP OF WORLD MUSIC
ARTISTS
Influential Getty music series features Andy Statman, Rahim AlHaj and
Souhail Kaspar, Chiwoniso, and Chango Spasiuk
LOS ANGELES -- Sounds of L.A, a free weekend concert series at the
Getty Center, opens its twelfth season with a spirited lineup that
explores Los Angeles' rich cultural landscape. The 2009 series
features a trademark mix of master musicians as well as emerging artists
whose work is admired by critics and the public alike.
In January, the 2009 season kicks off with the groundbreaking work of
clarinet and mandolin master Andy Statman. February's concert
features renowned oud virtuoso and composer Rahim Al Haj and respected
percussionist Souhail Kaspar. In March, the "defiantly optimistic"
young Zimbabwean vocalist Chiwoniso shares sounds inspired by her Shona
ancestors. The series closes in April with a performance by the
unquestioned master of Argentinean chamam, Chango Spasiuk.
Over the years, Sounds of L.A. has presented artists ranging from
renowned Indian classical vocalist Lakshmi Shankar and East L.A.'s
alternative Chicano rockers Quetzal, to Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura
and the jazz-infused Persian music of the L.A.-based Lin Ensemble.
"Because we present only four artists each year, we are very
thoughtful about our choices," says Laurel Kishi, performing arts
manager for the J. Paul Getty Museum. "The good news is that there are
so many traditions and music genres out there that the series could go
on forever."
Series curator Sabrina Lynn Motley adds "I've always felt that
Sounds is a very special little gem. Some of the finest musicians on
the planet are presented without charge to people living in one of the
world's most diverse cities. The potential is enormous and so is the
thrill of seeing people connect to cherished traditions and discover
artists who are pushing those same traditions in new and unexpected
ways."
SOUNDS OF L.A.: 2009 SCHEDULE
All concerts take place in the Harold M. Williams Auditorium at the
Getty Center. The Getty Center is located at 1200 Getty Center Drive,
Los Angeles, CA 90049. Admission is free; reservations are required. For
reservations call 310-440-7300 or visit www.getty.edu.
Andy Statman
For more than thirty years, clarinet and mandolin master Andy Statman
has broken new ground by skillfully integrating klezmer, bluegrass, and
jazz. Statman continues to delight and inspire with work that the New
York Times calls "the music of Jewish mystics, but interpreted not as a
tradition to be preserved but as a spiritual path to be followed in as
personal a manner as possible."
Saturday January 17, 2009, 7:30 pm; Sunday January 18, 2009, 3 pm
Reservations available beginning December 23.
Rahim AlHaj and Souhail Kaspar
In 1991, renowned oud virtuoso and composer Rahim AlHaj escaped Iraq
with nothing more than an unassailable passion for music. For this rare
L.A. concert, the Grammy-nominated AlHaj joins forces with respected
Lebanese percussionist Souhail Kaspar to present music from his latest
release Home Again.
Saturday February 7, 2009, 7:30 pm; Sunday February 8, 2009, 3 pm
Reservations available beginning January 22.
Chiwoniso
Born in Seattle, raised in Zimbabwe, Chiwoniso grew up listening to
everyone from Stevie Wonder to Mozart to the songs of her Shona
ancestors. Described as "a voice of hope and a guiding light for a
society in crisis," this defiantly optimistic singer shares her
trademark electrifying mbira-driven sound.
Saturday March 14, 2009, 7:30 pm; Sunday March 15, 2009, 3 pm
Reservations available beginning February 24.
Chango Spasiuk
The son of Ukrainian immigrants, Chango Spasiuk is the unquestioned
master of chamam, music that comes from the heart of northeastern
Argentina. Spasiuk's energetic virtuosity unleashes wild howls of
creative fervor coupled with an almost terrifying mastery of the
accordion. The resulting sound is at once hauntingly familiar and
movingly distinct.
Saturday April 4, 2009, 7:30 pm; Sunday April 5, 2009, 3 pm
Reservations available beginning March 24.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 24th, 2008
COMMUNITY ALERT and A CALL TO ACTION:
LEGENDARY MULTI-CULTURAL DANCE SCHOOL CLOSING!
Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, the legendary New YorkCity multi-ethnic
dance school and not-for-profit organization, is closing its doors on
December 31st 2008 after 15 years of "exceptional contributions to our
city",
(the council of NYC). Hit by the economic crisis -- with fewer students
attending classes -- and a major rent increase, DDDC has no other option
but to sadly shut down.
The immediate result would be 55 teachers and drummers losing their jobs.
Hundreds of children from lower income families losing the opportunity to
receive free dance scholarships, along with thousands of adult students
losing their community workout, a place to release stress and convene
"Since its establishment, Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre-one of New York
City's largest minority-owned cultural centers- has dedicated itself to
connecting men and women of all ages and ethnicities through the arts.
In a letter of June 2007, Mayor Bloomberg wrote, "As we look back on the
incredible accomplishments of DDDC's 15 years, we also look forward to
Even greater achievements on the horizon."
"I am confident that the New York community and government officials,
who understand the profound impact that our philosophy and ethnic dance
taught in our institution has on so many lives, will rally up and help us
continue our mission of providing health, fitness, and harmony amongst
New Yorkers" says the founder Djoniba Mouflet.
DDDC needs funds for a new home and is urgently seeking aid. You can
make donations on line at www.djoniba.com or by mail. Contributions will
allow for construction, fundraising, architectural design, web design,
building materials, office furniture and equipment,
Who knows how long this economic climate will last -but what kind of city
will be left when it's over, if we allow our community owned cultural
institutions
to close?
*About Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre*
Since its inception in 1992, as a not-for-profit cultural and charitable
organization, The Djoniba Dance and Drum Centre has strived to celebrate
our global diversity through world dance and music and is dedicated to
bridging the gap between all ages, ethnic groups,
and cultures through dance and music. The Centre is one of New York
City's largest minority-owned dance studio, and the only cultural center in
the
world specializing in multi-ethnic dance and drum. The Centre serves
thousands of
adults and children annually, has a roster of 35 master teachers dancers and
drummers, who teach more than 100 dance classes per week in more than 30
different styles of movement and music from around the world.
Founded and directed by Djoniba Mouflet, the internationally-acclaimed
drummer, dancer, teacher, performer and choreographer, the Centre
houses three dance studios, a children's program and
an adult evening program. DDDC has become a popular cultural and
fitness spot, attended by celebrities like Tyra Banks, Julia Roberts, Brook
Shields and featured in several magazines, newspapers and major TV shows.
Awarded "Best New York Dance School" several years in a row by The
Village Voice, New York Magazine, New York Press and AM New York,
DDDC has also been recognized by city officials-including Mayor Bloomberg,
The City Council, Manhattan Borough president Scott M. Stringer, as well
as NY State Assembly N. Godfrey for its outstanding service to the NY
community.
"I applaud Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre for your strong commitment to
the culture and community." Richard N. Godfrey / New York State Assembly
"It is the tradition and custom of the New York City Council to honor its
most
distinguished citizens, and today we are pleased to recognize Djoniba Dance
&
Drum Centre, Inc for its exceptional contributions to our City. Today, we
honor
Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, Inc an organization that has distinguished
itself
in service to the community: is has enriched us with its presence and
achievements
and is worthy of the esteem of all New Yorkers"
Proclamation by The Council of the City of New York.

Program Content and Activities
The Basic Weekend Facilitators' Training begins Friday evening and
ends Sunday evening. These days are packed with information and
experiences designed to give the participant the confidence, tools and
inspiration necessary to facilitate a rhythm based event and to build
a rhythm community in their home environment.
This experiential intensive includes learning and practice with
facilitation theory and techniques. Through small group activities
using movement, voice, musical instruments and improvisational games
participants will learn group leadership skills, platform presentation
techniques and body language communication. The training culminates
in the Community Drum Circle finale which will give participants an
opportunity to practice and observe the skills learned during the
weekend.
Program content and structure is based on the innovative facilitation
techniques developed by Arthur Hull and published in his books, Drum
Circle Facilitation: Community Building Through Rhythm, and Drum
Circle Spirit: Facilitating Human Potential Through Rhythm. These
books are required text.
No experience is necessary to attend.
You do not have to be a musician to participate. This program is
designed to be as much a personal growth process as a technical skills
training. Beginning facilitators to advanced trainers have found the
playshops to be stimulating and insightful.

12. Modes of Production from Kwame Nkrumah's Class Struggle in Africa
Posted by: "[email protected]" [email protected] african.beat
Date: Thu Jan 15, 2009 4:27 pm ((PST))
There have been five major types of production relationships known to
man----communalism, slavery, feudalism, capitalism and socialism. With the
establishment of the socialist state, man has embarked on the road to
communism. It was when private property relationships emerged, and as
communalism gave way to slavery and feudalism, that the class struggle
began.
In general at the opening of the colonial period, the peoples of Africa were
passing through the higher stage of communalism characterized by the
disintegration of tribal democracy and the emergence of feudal
relationships, hereditary tribal chieftaincies and monarchical systems. With
the impact of imperialism and colonialism, communalist socio-economic
patterns began to collapse as a result of the introduction of export crops
such as cocoa and coffee. The economies of the colonies became
interconnected with world capitalist markets. Capitalism, individualism, and
tendencies to private ownership grew. Gradually, primitive communalism
disintegrated and the collective spirit declined. There was an expansion of
private farming and the method of small commodity production.
But on the credit side, a new grass roots political leadership emerged
during the independence struggle. This was based on worker and peasant
support, and committed not only to the winning of political freedom but to a
complete transformation of society. This revolutionary leadership, although
of necessity associated with the national bourgeoisie in the independence
struggle was quite separate from it, and proceeded to break away after
independence to pursue its class socialist objectives. This struggle still
continues.

The AFRO-CUBAN LATIN JAZZ PROJECT is an extraordinary ensemble
comprised of Cuban musicians now residing in the U.S. On this their
first joint recording project titled ENCUENTRO, they make their debut
featuring the music of pianist Gustavo Ramirez Onna (NG La Banda).
Gustavo Ramirez Onna from Havana, Cuba studied music at the
International School of Music in Havana, Cuba. The harmonic influences
of Emiliano Salvador and Gonzalo Rubalcaba are revealed in his
adventurous original material, also packed with intriguing angular
melodies and improvisations. The music is driven by brilliant
jazz-fusion lines, coupled with strong funk-rock and Afro-Cuban
influences.
The recording features trap drummer Raúl Pineda (Chucho Valdés
Quartet), conguero and vocalist Jesús DÃaz (QBA), bassist Juan Carlos
Portillo, with special guest appearances by Bob Mintzer on the sax
(Yellowjackets), Nachito Herrera on keyboards and synthesizers, and
Dany LaBana on guitar. Combined, this distinguished powerhouse
defines promise and excitement for much more music to follow.
