3. AddisTunes: Rebel Music

Rebel Music: African Reggae
This week we are celebrating African Reggae, with artists representing the
entire continent – from Mauritania to Ethiopia to South Africa. If you are
looking for sweet sounding reggae…free from the effects of Autotune…check out
Sydney Salmon’s roots music or Sheba’s Ethio-infused lover’s rock. Or to get a
full sampling of reggae from all over Mama Africa….look no further than
“African Rebel Music.” If Dub is your thing, you MUST listen to how Tommy T
and Akale Wube weave together jazz and reggae into an awe-inspiring musical
tapestry. And to get the 411 on Dancehall, our man Eddie "STATS" Houghton's
regular column for Fader Magazine is your source.
1) Various: African Rebel Music
Presenting hits from 10 countries ‘African Rebel Music - Roots reggae and
dancehall’ gives insight into the new reggae dancehall movement in Africa.
2) Sydney Salmon: Ethiopia is Calling
Straight from Shashemane, Ethiopia….Syd is a musical virtuoso with a big
voice…and big heart! Check out his new CD – produced and recorded in the land
of Lucy and Selam – “Ethiopia is Calling.”
3) Sheba: Love this Lifetime ft. Bounty Killer
Lovers rock – known for its dedication the universal theme of “amor” – takes on
a new dimension when Sheba and Bounty Killer team up for “Love this Lifetime.”
4) Akale Wube: Kokob / Meche Deresche ft. Haile Selassie
These guys are musical geniuses! Their ability to capture the essence of Ethio
Jazz, overlayed with Dub sensibilities and the voice of H.I.M is brilliant!
This song will always remain a classic!
5) Tommy T: The Prester John Sessions
Tommy T defies categories…and so does his music. But his homage to reggae is
undeniable in “Oromo Dub.” Check out the man and his music! Tommy T is one of
our staff picks…which means that you won’t be disappointed.
6) Addiis Calling: Reggae from Ethiopia
One of our favorite Blog-o-meisters…Eddie “STATS” Houghton…writes about
Ethiopian reggae for Okay Player. Also, make sure to enjoy his insight into
the dancehall scene for Fader Magazine in his regular column “Ghetto Palms.”

5. Annual Los Angeles African Marketplace & Cultural Faire 2010 Cancell
Posted by: "[email protected]" [email protected] african.beat
Date: Thu Aug 12, 2010 4:29 pm ((PDT))
Dear African Marketplace Supporter,
Thank you for your interest in participating and supporting the Annual Los
Angeles African Marketplace & Cultural Faire. Unfortunately, much to our
regret, we must inform you that we made the decision to not produce the
event this year.
As have many similar special events in the city, we have come upon stiff
economic factors that prevent us at this time from moving forward with the
Cultural Faire. The seriousness of the economy has affected many whom we
depend on privately to fund the event. These include corporate America for
sponsorship, private small entrepreneurs for vending fees, and the City of
Los Angeles whom we depend upon for certain fee waivers, and the Citys
Recreation and Parks Department for use of the Rancho Cienega Park facility
that has been home to the African Marketplace for 16 of the past 20 years.
Over the years the African Marketplace & Cultural Faire has absorbed the fee
requested by the Department of Recreation and Parks at the cost of $100 per
vendor per day, but the fee of $185,000 they are asking this year has
exceeded our resources.
While we may not produce the event in the type of thematic environment so
many have come to appreciate, we have plans to work towards next year and
modify our approach to offer many of the villages and special elements that
comprise the much larger Cultural Faire thematic event to the public. We
will continue to maintain the type of quality in design, programming,
security, maintenance, and commercial offering as we did in the past.
Please let us know if you wish to be considered for a series of smaller
events throughout the coming months and in 2011 as we prepare for a larger
2011 Cultural Faire event reminiscent of the Annual Cultural Faire
appreciated worldwide between 1985 and 2008.
Please know, while we deeply regret not being able to move forward with the
2010 event, we appreciate you and your efforts to keep the African
Marketplace & Cultural Faire on the agendas of our city officials not merely
as a "street festival" but as a cultural institution that has drawn friends
and supporters across the nation and internationally, that has provided much
needed economic opportunities for our youth and our business community, that
has increased tourism to the City of Los Angeles, and is an organization
worthy of financial support and good will.
In the spirit of Ubuntu, we say we are here because you are here.
Respectfully,
James V. Burks
Founding Executive Director
African Marketplace, Inc.

The Brazilian musician singer/songwriter and actor, Seu Jorge is
considered to be a renewer of Brazilian pop samba. Seu Jorge was the
lead singer of the band Farofa Carioca, writing most of the songs on
their 1998 debut album Moro no Brasil. In 2001 he released Samba
Esporte Fino, a pop album influenced by the work of musicians Jorge
Ben Jor, Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento. The album was
re-released outside of Brazil in 2003 under the title Carolina. His
second album, the critically acclaimed Cru, was released in 2005.
And that same year he
recorded a live album with Brazilian singer Ana Carolina, titled Ana &
Jorge.
He has also gained recognition for his work as an actor and soundtrack
composer. He appeared in the critically acclaimed films City of God
and Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou--he also
provided much of the film's soundtrack in the form of Portuguese
language covers of classic David Bowie songs.
In June of 2006, he performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and
earlier this year performed with Thievery Corporation at Austin City
Limits.

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN/TODD BRODGINSKI
BRAZILIAN SINGER, GUITARIST AND ACTOR
SEU JORGE
COMING TO LA. LIVE’S
CLUB NOKIA
SATURDAY, AUGUST 14
SEU JORGE--the Brazilian singer and guitarist considered by fans to
have spearheaded the Brazilian samba renaissance of the early 21st
century--will perform Saturday, August 14th at CLUB NOKIA at L.A.
Live. Tickets for the Seu Jorge Presents ALMAZClub Nokia
show--presented in association with Brazilian Nites and 89.9 KCRW--go
on sale Friday, April 23 at 10:00 AM.
This gruff-voiced Carioca(resident of Rio de Janeiro) first made
international waves in the 2002 movie “City Of God,” playing the
vaguely terrifying gangster Knockout Ned. But he'd seduced Brazilians
in an earlier role: as part of pop group Farofa Carioca who had a
giant hit in 1998 with"Moro no Brasil" ("I Live in Brazil"). After
his role in “City Of God,” Jorge landed a part in Wes Anderson's
“The Life Aquatic,” singing amazing covers of David Bowie classics
in Portuguese. His North American debut, Cru, was released in 2005 to
critical acclaim and included cover versions of Serge Gainsbourg's
"Chatterton" and Leiber& Stoller’s "Don't" (which was a #1 hit for
Elvis Presley).
Tickets range in price from $19.50 to $40 and are available at all
Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.ticketmaster.com and from
9am-5pm, Mon-Fri at the STAPLESCenter Box Office located at 1111 S.
Figueroa St. No fees are charged at the STAPLESCenter box office or

Limits.

Sound of the Drum: Nigerian-Born Drummer Tosin
What would happen if Fela Kuti and Elvin Jones got together for a jam session?
The answer - Tosin Arbisala. One of the latest artists to join the AddisTunes
family is the Nigerian-born drummer Tosin Arbisala, who brilliantly fuses
African musical idioms with jazz, gospel, neo-soul, and other contemporary
music genres while writing in English and Yoruba.
Check out his two killer CDs: "Mean What U Say" and "Ha-lle-lu-jazz Project
(What's On Your Mind)". You will not be disappointed!
