OUR NEXT TOPIC OF DISCUSSION IS: African Diet and Nutrition

What is food to us? Without food, we cannot live. With food, we stay alive, but
the quality of our lives, and the length of our days are dependent on the foods
we eat and in what quantity. Food we eat for nourishment, and in small amounts,
we eat herbs as medicines. To quote Hippocrates: Let food be thy medicine and
medicine be thy food

When is a food a medicine? In this weeks episode of African Health Dialogues
we will discuss cholesterol-lowering foods, dietary source of soluble fiber,
and red blood cell building foods in different African cultures. We invite our
listeners to call in and talk about what they eat and what they understand or
recommend as good healthy food.

If you are interested in joining our discussion, send us an email at:

the show, otherwise please mark your calendar and call in during the show to

REDCAT presents
Faustin Linyekula/Studios Kabako: more more more… future

featuring legendary Kinshasa guitarist Flamme Kapaya

Wed Oct 5 – Sat Oct 8 | 8:30 pm
http://www.redcat.org/event/faustin-linyekula

Three exceptional male dancers led by renowned Congolese choreographer and
director Faustin Linyekula join with a raucous on-stage band in this fervent
celebration of hope in the face of the ongoing legacy of war and ruin in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Set to the blistering poems of political prisoner Antoine Vumilia
Muhindo—Linyekula's childhood friend—more more more… future brings original
music by Kinshasa guitar sensation Flamme Kapaya, who mixes infectious,
hip-swinging Congolese pop with hefty doses of raging rock. Linyekula and
Kapaya build the performance around the pop genre of ndombolo, inverting that
genre's lurid fantasies of easy fame and riches into vivid stories of economic
hardship and social injustice experienced daily by the Congolese people as they
seek to reclaim their future.

"To be positive is the most subversive," Linyekula writes. "Celebrating is a
way of resisting."

9. WOMEX 13 in Cardiff, Wales, UK: 23-27 Oct 2011

Date: Fri Oct 7, 2011 2:25 pm ((PDT))

WOMEX NEWSletter #24, 29 September 2011

+++ WOMEX 13 in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom +++

Dear WOMEXicans,

This week is packed with major WOMEX announcements: here is another
one, disclosing where WOMEX will be going next after the 2012 edition
in Thessaloniki, Greece.
 __________________________________________
WOMEX 13 IN CARDIFF, WALES, UNITED KINGDOM

In 2013, WOMEX will be exploring Celtic grounds: Cardiff in Wales,
United Kingdom, has won the international bid to host WOMEX from
Wednesday, 23 to Sunday, 27 October 2013.

WOMEX received proposals from nine cities within Europe for the 2013
edition. The 'WOMEX 13 Official Host City Candidates' shortlist
included Cardiff and Glasgow, United Kingdom, plus Dublin, Ireland.
A complex selection process, including a round of site visits to the
three cities and in-depth talks with all parties involved, preceded
the final decision for the Welsh candidate.

Daniela Teuber, WOMEX Director of Production, states: "We're very
happy that Cardiff will be hosting WOMEX in 2013. The city offers a
most favourable setting for our complex event and its 2500 delegates
and many artists from all over the globe: truly professional, highly
motivated local production partners; wonderful venues matching our
multifaceted needs in close proximity; and Wales' outstanding
cultural wealth, hospitality and scenic beauty."

Welcoming the news, the First Minister, Rt. Hon Carwyn Jones AM, said:
"WOMEX is a great opportunity to bring the most important world music
stage to Wales as well as developing the sector in a sustainable way
within our country. WOMEX Cardiff will place the music from Wales on
the world stage alongside more established markets so that Wales'
authentic music traditions become more widely known internationally
and are positioned beside music from our Celtic neighbours. Hosting
WOMEX will allow us to grow the profile of Wales's traditional music,
both within and out of the country."

The bid to host WOMEX in 2013 was led by Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales, a
partnership between Welsh Music Foundation, Wales Arts International
and Arts Council of Wales, with support from British Council and Welsh
Government. The two important venues Wales Millennium Centre and
Cardiff Motorpoint Arena as well as Cardiff Council and Cardiff & Co,
are all formal partners for WOMEX 13.

Cardiff is the 10th largest city in the United Kingdom and the capital
of Wales. Located in the very south of the green and mountainious
country bounded by the Irish/Celtic Sea, Cardiff is spread out on the
banks of the river Severn flowing into the Bristol Channel.

A taste of Wales' abundant musical talent - including the acts Calan,
9Bach and Mabon - was showcased at last year's WOMEX in Copenhagen,
creating appetite for more among the WOMEX delegates.

The city's rich culture has a diverse range of influences, from the
Romans and Normans of antiquity to the industrial revolution and 'the
black gold', which transformed Cardiff from a small town into a
thriving international city.

Welsh is an official language affirming Wales' Celtic identity. It is
one of the oldest spoken languages in Europe, and is the most popular
of the Celtic languages still in use today.

Cardiff offers all of the features and benefits of a capital city, at
a low cost, compared to other capital cities and major regional cities
in the UK.

Here's a Cardiff sneak preview on YouTube:

Since its first edition in 1994 WOMEX has been travelling all across
Europe from Berlin (1994), via Brussels (1995), Marseille (1997),
Stockholm (1998), Berlin (1999 + 2000), Rotterdam (2001), Essen
(2002 + 2004), Newcastle (2005), Sevilla (2003 + 2006-2008) to
Copenhagen (2009-2011). In 2012, WOMEX will be moving south to
Thessaloniki, Greece.

Kind regards from your WOMEX team
