KZN Promotes Isizulu BuaNews (Pretoria) http://www.gcis.gov.za/ March 3, 2005 Posted to the web March 3, 2005 Sibusiso Mboto Pietermaritzburg KwaZulu-Natal Education Department MEC Ina Cronje has welcomed the news that IsiZulu will be taught in all public schools in the province next year. The announcement was one of the key points Premier Sbu Ndebele made in his state of the province address last week. Mr Ndebele said the primary reason was to ensure that the indigenous language was preserved. "We welcome the news and it is our belief in the department that this will be heeded by all public schools in the department," said Ms Cronje. She expressed hope that all schools would start making arrangements a year earlier as all had been informed on time. The diminishing use and teaching of the language was one of the points highlighted at an education stakeholders' summit here recently. The summit noted that there were schools in the province with a 90 percent attendance of black children, but had no Zulu teachers. Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has also expressed his concern over the diminishing use of the language. The KZN legislature has also added value to the Premier's call by committing itself to carry out its communication and all its affairs in both IsiZulu and English. According to the office of the Speaker of the legislature, this will take effect as from the beginning of August 2005. -- ------------------------ Yahoo!
