Fulah or Fula) is a loan from the Mande (Manding) languages for the Ful'be, the
same people who in French are called Peul (or Peuhl - a Wolof loan) and in
Nigerian English are called Fulani (from the Hausa term). In Guinea and Sierra
Leone they call their language Pular. DZO

Africanist Movement-Sierra Leone has condemned the decision of local authorities
and Station Manager of Radio Mankeneh (FM98.1) in Makeni to unilaterally ban
the airing of the usual community news in fullah and other subsequent
programmes.

Africanist Movement Country Director, Chernoh Alpha M. Bah says the termination
of the said programme is contrary to principles governing freedom of expression
and equally runs against the purpose for which the said community radio was
established.

"We believe that such a decision has the potential of generating ethnic tension
amongst the people and would negatively affect the peace and stability we are
currently enjoying because it is absolutely geared towards the marginalization
of the fullah community," the Africanist Movement said in a press release
issued Tuesday.

The Organization says the Ministry of Information and Independent Media
Commission together with other organizations and authorities concerned should
intervene and resolve the matter because it contaminates the peaceful
coexistence and habitation of the fullah people and members of other tribes
whose leaders spearheaded the decision." Africanist Movement Public Relations
Officer, Ibrahim Conteh says a delegation would be dispatched to meet the
station manager and local authorities and negotiate a peaceful resolution of
the issue in order to advert any boomerang reaction that would create a crisis
situation amongst the people.

"Africans belong to a single family and should therefore avoid creating a
dichotomy that offers no room for mutual development," he said.

The said community news in fullah language was started early last year and it
was aired alongside other languages whose ethnicities occupying Makeni and its
environs. It was a daily current affairs programme presented by Abu Bakarr Bah
(alias DJ Quelt). For support to this campaign send emails to
