Everyone wins with bilingualism
Vijay Sewtahal, commenting on Minister of Education Naledi Pandor's plans for
multilingualism in schools, is concerned about the future of English in South
Africa. ("English essential for tourism", Sunday Tribune, May 29, 2005).
Not mentioned by either side in this discussion is the fact that study after
study shows that pupils provided with a strong foundation in their first
language find it easier to learn a second language.
South Africa does not have to decide between English proficiency and preserving
indigenous languages and cultures.
Good bilingual programmes do both.
