Nigeria - The Living Human Treasures Project

UNESCO is working with the Federal Ministry of Culture and Tourism 
to establish a system of Living Human Treasures in Nigeria. The 
Project, sponsored by the Norwegian Government, is designed to 
recognise experienced persons who possess to a very high degree, the 
knowledge and skills required for performing or creating specific 
elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The fields of 
expertise currently under consideration are:

1. oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle 
of the intangible cultural heritage;

2. performing arts;

3. social practices, rituals and festive events;

4. knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe;

5. traditional craftsmanship

The award ceremony for the Living Human Treasures is planned for 
October 2005.
