The Soul Beat newsletter (Issue 46 - Caring for the Environment, August 24 2005 - http://www.comminit.com/africa/index.html ) has the following item:
"17. African Environmental Film Foundation (AEFF) Distributes environmental documentaries filmed in Tanzania and Kenya for the purpose of educating East Africans about ecological awareness, conservation and utilisation of natural resources. Based in California, USA, AEFF distributes its films internationally free of charge. The films are available in English, Kiswahili as well as nine indigenous African languages." http://www.comminit.com/africa/links/linksngos/links-1480.html In checking the AEFF website http://www.aeffonline.org/aefffilms.html , it seems that one film "Wanted Dead or Alive?" (about elephants) is translated into 9 languages, but among them, only Swahili and Maa (Maasai) are indigenous to subSaharan Africa. The rest are major languages from around the world, since the film is intended for international distribution. All films are apparently done in English, and many have Swahili translations. Several are also translated into Arabic and French. One film, "A Keeper's Diary" has a Kikamba version as well. It's a very interesting and worthy effort. It would be interesting not only to see more African language translations, but also use of "same-language subtitling" (similar to closed captioning) in those languages to enhance the impact and add a literacy-training dimension.
