Actually I thought that the Year was decided by AU earlier. ACALAN
(African Academy for Languages) actually was set up a few years ago,
but apparently there were some official steps yet to take by the AU
that were just done (I know that its president, Adama Samassekou, was
in Khartoum for the AU session). DZO

The African Union has decided in its 6th ordinary session held in
Khartoum to declare 2006 the Year of African Languages
The Union also decided to establish the African Academy for Languages
as a specialized office of the Union seated in Bamako the capital of Mali
In its declaration the Union underlined the importance of African
languages as instrumental tools for education and culture in order to
accomplish African development and progress
It is worth noting that the Leader of the Revolution has introduced
his strategic and intellectual vision for an African cultural
revolution aiming at preserving African identity rooted in its ancient
history heritage and civilization that dates back to prehistory
This was stated in the Leader's interjection at the African
Intellectuals Reunion which was held in the Senegalese capital Dakar
on the 8th of October 2004
The Leader stressed then in his interjection the importance of African
Languages demonstrating that our culture heritage arts music and
folklore in Africa can not be preserved and associated with except
through the language of our forefathers
The Leader called for the need to study these languages and the means
to unite them and make them written languages but away from using
Latin letters that has spoiled the languages that used these letters
