City College and Cameroon Advice and Support Services UK celebrates this year¡¦s theme¡XAfrican Languages: Diversity, participation, dialogue¡Xwhich ties closely to UNESCO¡¦s commitment in ¡§Education in a Multilingual World,¡¨ UNESCO Education Position Paper, 2003, ¡§In the field of language and education, the recent reports and recommendations of the International Conference on Education (ICE) have emphasized the importance of mother tongue instruction at the beginning of formal education for pedagogical, social, and cultural considerations.¡¨ (International Conference on Education 46th Session 2001: final report, p. 11.). CAASS UK will work in partnership with City College to serve the lesser-known African language communities in Birmingham by documenting them through linguistic research and encouraging the development of multilingual education programs. We believe that the use of African national languages in British education system would benefit students, parents, teachers, and the community as a whole. CAASS UK and City College also supports mother tongue instruction and seeks to work in collaboration with others to improve educational quality.
