African Language Conference

City College and Cameroon Advice and Support Services UK celebrates
this year¡¦s theme¡XAfrican Languages: Diversity, participation,
dialogue¡Xwhich ties closely to UNESCO¡¦s commitment in ¡§Education in
a Multilingual World,¡¨ UNESCO Education Position Paper, 2003, ¡§In
the field of language and education, the recent reports and
recommendations of the International Conference on Education (ICE)
have emphasized the importance of mother tongue instruction at the
beginning of formal education for pedagogical, social, and cultural
considerations.¡¨ (International Conference on Education 46th Session
2001: final report, p. 11.). CAASS UK will work in partnership with
City College to serve the lesser-known African language communities
in Birmingham by documenting them through linguistic research and
encouraging the development of multilingual education programs.

We believe that the use of African national languages in British
education system would benefit students, parents, teachers, and the
community as a whole. CAASS UK and City College also supports mother
tongue instruction and seeks to work in collaboration with others to
improve educational quality.
