Ethiopia: Scholar Prepares Shekigna-Amharic Dictionary The Ethiopian Herald (Addis Ababa) http://www.ethpress.gov.et/Herald/articlefront.asp February 16, 2007 Posted to the web February 16, 2007 ENA Mizan A scholar, who has prepared a bilingual dictionary, Shekigna-Amharic-Shekigna Dictionary, received a financial award and a title in the Shaka Nationality for his exemplary deeds toward developing the local language, the Shaka Zone Administration said. Chief of the Zonal Administration, Wodo Atto told ENA recently that the preparation of the dictionary would help to turn the language, one of the languages spoken in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples State, into written language as it is granted in the Ethiopian Constitute. The Shekigna-Amharic Dictionary, which comprises about 11,000 words, would have greater role in preparing a curriculum and text books in Shekigna language for first cycle primary school students, he said. The dictionary would help the children of the nationality attend primary education in their vernacular, he said, adding the zonal administration would do everything possible toward publishing the new dictionary. The scholar namely Abera Bechuro, who is a teacher by profession, awarded 7,000 birr and the title of "Necherasha" in the Shaka Nationality, the title which is given to persons who registered remarkable achievements for the good of the nationality.
