A scholar, who has prepared a bilingual dictionary,
Shekigna-Amharic-Shekigna Dictionary, received a financial award and a title
in the Shaka Nationality for his exemplary deeds toward developing the local
language, the Shaka Zone Administration said.

Chief of the Zonal Administration, Wodo Atto told ENA recently that the
preparation of the dictionary would help to turn the language, one of the
languages spoken in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples State, into
written language as it is granted in the Ethiopian Constitute.

The Shekigna-Amharic Dictionary, which comprises about 11,000 words, would
have greater role in preparing a curriculum and text books in Shekigna
language for first cycle primary school students, he said.

The dictionary would help the children of the nationality attend primary
education in their vernacular, he said, adding the zonal administration
would do everything possible toward publishing the new dictionary.

The scholar namely Abera Bechuro, who is a teacher by profession, awarded
7,000 birr and the title of "Necherasha" in the Shaka Nationality, the title
which is given to persons who registered remarkable achievements for the
good of the nationality.
