Linguapax Prize 2007

On February 21, coinciding with the celebration of UNESCO's International
Mother Language Day, the Linguapax Institute is pleased to announce the name
of the awardee of this year's Linguapax prize edition. Amongst more than
twenty cadidates, the Advisory Committee of Linguapax has chosen professor
Maya Khemlani David of the University of Malaya for her studies on language
maintenance and revival on minority languages, specially in the South-East
Asia region.

Maya Khemlani David (University of Malaya)

An Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, United Kingdom,
she has conducted numerous studies of language choice and language
maintenance/shift of minority communities in Malaysia. These include her
native Sindhi community in Malaysia, Singapore and London, the Punjabi Sikh
community in the Kuala Lumpur metropolis and those in Malay heartland in the
east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the Nepali community in Rawang, Selangor;
the Portuguese community in Malacca, the Pakistani community in Machang,
Kelantan, the Tamil community in Kuala Lumpur, the Mahmeri community in
Sepang. These studies been published in reputable journals like the
International Journal of the Sociology of Language, Multilingua. Maya has
also edited Methodological and Analytical Issues in Language Maintenance and
Shift Studies ( Peter Lang, Frankfurt, 2002). Through her seminal
contributions over past thirty years, Prof. David has made a significant
impact in the Malaysian society at large, particularly in the fields of
language maintenance and revival of minority languages in the Southeast Asia
region. Prof. David has played a laudable role in the Movement of the rights
for lesser-used languages. She has edited a number of books to promote
understanding of language minorities of Asia and Africa.
