SUMMARY
This week, the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration
(NTIA), issued a notice requesting “comments and recommendations from all
interested stakeholders on its international Internet policy priorities for
2018 and beyond.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday there were no plans to shut
down social media sites or limit internet freedoms in Russia, and that a
“civilized” solution was needed to make the internet safer.
Thursday’s meeting of NATO defense ministers has concluded, with an agreement
to set up a Cyber Operations Centre, as part of the new Command Structure, and
integrate sovereign cyber effects into alliance operations and missions.
The European Commission proposed on Wednesday to spend 9.2 billion euros (10.83
billion U.S. dollars) on the European Union's (EU) first digital program to
prioritize investments in supercomputers and artificial intelligence (AI).
New European copyright laws could outlaw memes on the internet, campaigners
have claimed. On data protection, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)
has fined the British and Foreign Bible Society £100,000 after cyber hackers
gained access to more than 400,000 supporters’ personal data. On net
neutrality, Senate Democrats are urging Speaker Paul Ryan to hold a vote on a
bill that would restore the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) net
neutrality rules.
