Hi Sanoussi,

Theoretically, IPv6 in a LAN segment could be even a bit slower than IPv4,
because the bigger header, but in the reality, there are many issues that
impact the IPv4 “speed” in Internet.

It is not just a matter of speed. There are many datacenters that are turning
into IPv6-only, such as Facebook. That means that when you use IPv4, your
actual performance is impacted by several levels of NAT or translations, which
make IPv4 perform worse than IPv6, even up to 40%, which is a lot.

https://conference.apnic.net/47/assets/files/APKS756/ipv4aas-tutorial-and-hands-on.pdf

(see slide 41, I’ve done a similar presentation in the last Dakar AfriNIC, but
I can’t find the slides on-line)

Please note that those graphics show “time to complete an HTTP get”. But in the
end, this is what really users “perceive”.

Also, newer IPv6 networks in general may perform better, as shown by many
measurements, just google for them.

Regards,

Jordi

So what is the advantage of using IPv6 in term of speed as compare with IPv4?

Greetings from Nigeria,

The survey is a good Initiative from AFRINIC, the outcome of the survey and
the training programme will go a long way to improve Internet development
in Africa.

Warm regards,

Idowu.
