According to my records (Jazziz is probably the source), jazz/funk
bassist Stanley Clarke (played with the likes of Chick Corea,
George Duke, and Jean-Luc Ponty, and as a solo artist) was also
born on this date, in 1951. As far as I know, he first made his
mark with Chick Corea's original Return to Forever band in 1972, at
the ripe old age of 21. He is known as being the "inventor" of the
piccolo bass, an electric bass tuned an octave higher than a
regular electric bass. According to
<http://www.ctbasses.com/clarke.html>, it was Clarke's idea, but
he had luthier Carl Thompson build it.
Clarke is now a reknowned film scorer, having written scores for
"Passenger 57" and other films. Someone want to help out with
