What's the story on that? What did they do?
I did some research on Sam Cooke for a playwright, and the circumstances
surrounding his death are unusual.
Cooke was killed by a motel manager--who reportedly was protecting a woman
Cooke had picked up earlier that evening (there were suggestions that
there were "past associations" between the two women. It took some time
before Los Angeles police realized that the dead man was someone other
than a black john doe (remember, this happened in 1964).
When he was identified, his body was taken to Chicago. There were
thousands of mourners, so the funeral home put his body on display (I
seem to recall that souvenirs were also sold). The funeral became chaotic
when viewers broke through the window of the display area.
It was all a very sad situation. Every time I listen to Cooke's "Another
Saturday Night," I can't help but think about it.
