The 2nd annual Future of Music Summit was held at Georgetown University,
Washington, DC, on January 7-8. Their stated goal was to, "bring many of
the best and the brightest people working in music and technology...
to discuss the most critical music/tech issues impacting our community."

The event was sponsored by The Future of Music Coalition and the
Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts. Keynote speakers included
Representative John Conyers, Jr., Ranking Minority Member, U.S. House
Judiciary Committee; Representative Rick Boucher, Co-Chair, Congressional
Internet Caucus; and CA State Senator Kevin Murray, Chair, Select
Committee on the Entertainment Industry. There were numerous panels that
discussed copyright, technology, and policy issues that have affected or
will affect the music industry.

I wanted to tell you about this for two reasons: one, I found it to be an
incredibly informative event, not only because of the activities
scheduled, but due to the contacts I made there; and two, because I was
dismayed by the small number of minority musicians and/or lawyers present.
As African American musicians, we need to make it our business to know
what is going on and to lend our voices to shaping the lobbying efforts
that come from events like this.

Unfortunately, I only learned about the summit via email on New Years Day.
I was able to apply for and receive a musician scholarship that covered
the registration. So, I was lucky that I was able to attend. If I get
the word soon enough, I will pass it on to the list in the hope that
others can come. I also hope that you will pass on notice of upcoming
conferences, etc., to the list.

One last note: I did have the honor of meeting Bob Davis of Soul Patrol
fame. We had a very enjoyable--but too brief--conversation about our
current projects. It's nice to now be able to put a face to his posts.
