Hi,

In prior rounds of discussion, we raised the possibility of supporting 64-bit
volume ids. In reviewing this, I was surprised to notice that the discussion
did not move on to vnode number.

I make out at least two sub-topics:

1. the limit of 2^32 vnodes per volume per se
2. the justification for preserving forever the artifact that odd vnode numbers
(only) are directories

A couple of times over the last year or so, Tom Keiser had mentioned the notion
of modernizing or generalizing AFSFid, but I am unaware of wider community
thinking on this.

Regards,

Matt
