I don't understand what's wrong with the flip answer. I'd take the flip answer 
FARTHER and remove the [] text. If you have a key, use it...

A related question, which simon may have been trying to ask, is "what set of 
callback RPCs does the client require be authenticated"

This leads to other questions, like:

what does the client do with an rpc that should have been authenticated but 
wasn't, and

what does the server do with an authentication error?
