Britain basks in hottest day of the year with temperatures hitting 32.2C as
forecasters predict a cooler weekend (but only by 4 degrees!)

   - Temperatures reach 32.2C in Hampton, south-west London making it the
new hottest day of the year
   - Mercury reached 32C in Northolt, north-west London, while Heathrow
   recorded 31.9C
   - A man and a boy drowned in a lake where swimming is banned in King's
Lynn, Norfolk, while trying to cool off
   - A woman swimmer also died after getting into difficulties in the sea
off a beach in Looe, Cornwall last night
   - Met Office issue a 'level three' heatwave warning, which means the
weather can be a danger to the very old and young
   - But there is no risk of a hosepipe ban yet because last summer was so
   wet
   - Britain basks in the fifth consecutive day of 30C-plus weather today
for the first time since 2006

With temperatures reaching 32.2C in Hampton, south-west London, and the Met
Office issuing a 'level three' heatwave warning, many people are hoping the
spell of good weather lasts in time for the weekend.
And their wishes will be answered, as forecasters predict the balmy weather
will still be around on Saturday - although it will be a touch cooler.
The west of England will still enjoy temperatures of 28C, while eastern and
central parts of England will have to make do with temperatures of around
27C, as some cloud will blot the blue skies.
However, the Met Office estimates that much of the cloud will be burned off
by the bright sun and warned that there will be no fresh breezes as winds
are expected to be very light.
A spokesman said: 'It will be dry, bright and continue to be very hot - but
will be slightly cooler as temperatures will vary between 26C and 28C
across much of England'.

There has been just 4mm of rain in England and Wales so far this month and
the country is on course to see the driest July since records began in 1766
- as long as the good summer weather holds for another two weeks.
The driest July ever recorded was in 1825 when just 8mm of rain fell.
Yesterday people were making the most of the glorious summer sunshine and
flooding onto the beaches, into parks or simply going out in the back
garden.
After 11 straight days of scorching temperatures in excess of 28C, the mean
temperature is a degree above the July average of 23.4C.
Britain as a whole has only seen 9.2mm of rainfall so far this month, which
is just 12 per cent of the July average of 34.6mm.
Scotland has seen the most rainfall so far with 16.8mm, but that is only 17
per cent of the monthly average.
'England and Wales have seen just 4mm of rain this month', a Met Office
spokesman said. 'But it's too early to judge where it will end up in the
record.'.
