One of my points is that much of the onion architecture is an illusion even if voluntary. Also a product of biases. Nature has tendencies towards stratification and layering. And minds have conceptual biases towards objects verses ethers and continuums as well as hierarchies for many reasons. So we metaphorically gravitate towards these structural topologies referentially and customarily obey them. But, one can currently trans-dimensionalize across onion boundaries now, teleportation technology not needed if you can ignore the illusion. Though ignoring some layers can be almost impossible but once it's done whole worlds open up, it requires strength of mind. Also related to this is the trend of decentralization a' la blockchain. It's dissolving cumbersome onions. But you are right the outer layers are gearing up for a fight. Like the old financial system verses new.
